Critic Reviews for Call Your Mother Season 1
All Critics (10) | Top Critics (5) | Fresh (0) | Rotten (10)
Not much happens beyond exaggerated and unfunny stuff about mom not understanding kids today, or L.A., or social media. The central figure has no distinct personality and the show, at 30 minutes, seems to go on forever.
The most memorable character on "Call Your Mother" is a cute, cuddly golden retriever - which speaks volumes about the show's chances going forward.
If the show is too timid to give its protagonist any flaws other than "loving her children too much," it's at least auspicious in exploring how her helicopter parenting has affected her children, especially their relationship to each other.
The show has a pleasant warmth, but it seems to have too little of a sense about what within it works to find its footing.
Ms. Sedgwick seems positioned to carry most of the burden, and other than Jean being meddlesome or looking for a sex life, there aren't any obvious avenues to be followed.
Weak helicopter mom sitcom has language, drinking.
"You don't get to pick your family." You do get to pick what sitcoms you watch, however, and it's hard to imagine Call Your Mother making the cut.
There isn't even a glimmer that you can identify that will make you think the show can find itself.
Sometimes there's comfort in that kind of familiarity, but only rarely, and this doesn't seem like one of the few exceptions.
Oh, there are a few chuckles... More often, though, Call Your Mother is unleashing punchlines that misfire or just plain miss.

12h agoWhat a waste of Kyra Sedgwick. Zero supporting cast as well.

4d agoWhile I'm a long-time fan of Kyra Sedgwick, this show needs to quickly pick up the pace, or suffer a hasty exit. So far, the kids as depicted are mean (daughter), immature & clueless (son), and not particularly worth uprooting their mother's life in Iowa to visit them in L.A. Speaking of L.A., the lifestyle is portrayed in a cartoonish fashion, and the laugh track isn't helping. I'd recommend musical transitions for emphasis, and lose the canned laughter. The most compelling characters are the rascally neighbor, and the daughter's roommate. Don't get me started on the shallow social influencer. Ugh! Please, step up the writing and give Kyra more to work with!

5d agoWhile it does have its funny moments and a great cast, call your mother struggles to give you a full episode of content and retain your attention.

Jan 18, 2021Such a funny, fresh look at what happens when your kids are grown. Are you still a mother? The answer is YES! It's refreshing to see a mom on TV that can actually be the Mom (age wise). An DAMN, Kyra Sedgewick is FUNNY. Such good writing and a great cast.
