Candy Land is only interested in borrowing the board game as a support, over which its producers have thrown the tasteless and overused piece of fondant that is the Food Network 'Wars' franchise. Go to Full Review

01/09/2022 Candy Land is possibly the one board game which we have all played. It's a nice, entry level game little kids love, because who doesn't like candy? And, unlike Monopoly, it's a fun walk through an easy board, no real estate strategy required. So I can understand the logic behind the production bosses giving the okay to the people who pitched making a Candy Land game show. Who wouldn't like it? It certainly looks like Candy Land. The set is beautiful. And I think the cast - some of them clearly working very hard at being interesting to look at - is great for the show. But the show fails to capture even a small portion of the magical feel of the classic board game. Once the contestants get accustomed to the set, they are sent on a scavenger hunt for candy and candy-making ingredients. The candy looks like it came from Costco, mostly, which makes sense. In the first episode they send some P.A.s out with a credit card and a shopping list of colorful gummies, chocolates and lollipops. Much of what the contestants find in bowls tucked in among the fake giant candy, they taste, appreciatively announcing "It's delicious!" as if they've never had Costco gummies before. (Disclosure: Up until a couple years ago I worked with one of the USA's largest manufacturers of gummies and other candies. You should taste that stuff when it's super-fresh. Amazing.) Host Kristin Chenowith is energetic as always. Her familiar "Alvin and the Chipmunks" voice fits right in among the giant lollipops and towering licorice sticks. And the outfit she wears in the first show is gloriously perfect for the occasion. But the show doesn't seem to have much for her to do. Her role seems to have been mainly to help convince Food Network to pay for the show. "It's America's favorite board game! And we already have KRISTIN CHENOWITH on board!" I think the most deadly flaws in this show revolve around its non-linear, non-gameplaying nature, sending people across the board into the various lands seemingly at random rather than "playing Candy Land"; plus, the fact that it becomes apparent it's just another garden-variety cooking competition plopped onto a Candy Land board. We've seen a lot of these by now. If they recorded it in front of a green screen, they could superimpose whatever background they wanted. It has no need to be set in Candy Land, because Candy Land adds nothing to the show other than a colorful set filled with fiberglass lollipops and pathways scattered with plastic sugar crystals. I like these shows as much as anybody, especially the king of them all, The Great British Bake-Off. But we already have multiple shows with artisans competing to make cakes and candies. They were here first. As Walt Disney said when refusing to do a sequel, "you can't top pigs with pigs". No, you can't. Maybe they should have worked a little longer on what the show would be before they put it out there. See more 01/25/2021 It's a good change from baking and cooking shows. A good break from the same ole same ole. The moderators are great ,especially Aarti. It is like a American version of British Bake Off, but with candy and based on the game CandyLand. Passed the time and the episodes go by really quickly. If you like CandyLand or candy and baking competition show is one you might want to watch 2 stars. See more Read all reviews
