What to Know

Critics Consensus

Spread thinly across run-of-the-mill characters in an unconvincing setting, City on Fire is akin to getting doused with a cold bucket of water.

To the extent that the book was a disguised genre thriller, the show does a serviceable job of taming Hallberg’s story to the small screen. Go to Full Review

The resulting series lacks a sense of place, a hodgepodge of characters seemingly inspired by different decades, and even a notable era-friendly soundtrack. The book’s page-turning pull is gone. Go to Full Review

A convoluted mess, despite great potential. Go to Full Review

Wit and elements of drama are reigned in to throw light only on the mystery enveloping the story making the narration dull. But the ensemble will convince you to persevere through these hiccups. Go to Full Review

... Immerses us into all kinds of private hells that are dangerously fascinating. [Full review in Spanish] Go to Full Review

Despite the rich setting, the series doesn't seem to have much to actually say about how its characters navigate the trauma of the Twin Towers falling, aside from arbitrarily assigning one a dead father. Go to Full Review

Bob P @RT03138996 07/30/2023 This show showed some promise in the first couple of episodes, then descended into absurdity and banality with each successive minute. Not only was the acting horrible--and worse with each episode, culminating in godawful acting in the last couple of painful episodes (the dad was particularly odious)--but the story line grew increasingly idiotic as it steamed along. The ending, however, was the worst; when the big reveal happens (watch out, small plot spoiler coming) and the wife looks to see the name of the baby she gave up for adoption, the stupidity of the writing peaked. What an awful show. If I could have given it less than a star Iwould have. Not only was this show irritating, but it was insulting in its brainless writing and terrible acting. I particularly liked the fact that one of the characters recovers from a heroin addiction in about a day or two, and his gay affectations came and went between episodes. Then too, there was the bad guy, whose brilliance equaled that of a 10-watt bulb, but who had a mysterious power that controlled his nitwit minions. But to cap it all off, I predicted about 5 plot resolutions that happened at the end of the awful show. Truly a steaming pile of videography. Stupid stupid stupid. If you watch this and waste the time, as we did, you have no one to blame--you've been warned! See more mindy l @Mindy1934 07/04/2023 I " F" LOVED THIS series! THE Acting the storyline scenery everything about this series was absolutely phenomenal I don't understand why you wouldn't want to have a season 2 shame on you See more Arnold O @RT17119558 06/23/2023 This turned out better than I expected it to. "City on Fire" has engaging dialogue, solid character growth, and hardly any plot inconsistencies, which I found quite impressive given the number of things the show tackled story-wise. I can't comprehend that people think the writing is subpar. It's not perfect, but it consistently delivers and certainly has its great moments. Despite a few odd character interactions and representation, the writing is pretty airtight. And it only gets better as the show progresses. While the busy plot focuses on multiple storylines simultaneously, the show never sacrifices one for the other. It will sometimes seem like two shows at once, but everything is connected brilliantly. This split focus between storylines is done tastefully to build relationships between certain characters and generally make the story more cohesive in the end. I also love that there are open ends, leaving the possibility of a return, but the main conflict is mostly resolved. It's all crafted very neatly, I'm confident I'm watching a decent adaptation without even having read the book. The characters are mostly serviceable, and an amusing one pops up every so often. They serve their purpose in the story well and are played by competent actors. The dynamic between the two main characters is also great. Every scene with Chase Sui Wonders (Sam) is gripping. She breathes life into Oleff's character (Charlie), who comes into his own regarding honouring and defending Sam, which scored his character some points. I didn't think he was boring. The production looks good, the cinematography is solid, and the score/soundtrack augments the dated feel of the show, given the setting. It's nothing revolutionary, but I found it very engaging and I might have teared up a few times during the finale. I think it's worth your time. I never guessed the twist and I don't see why people don't like the pacing, I thought it went pretty well. I'd definitely recommend for a weekend binge , its how I watched it.
