It's a smart and solid miniseries, particularly for those who don't already watch a lot of bleak British detective shows and can still be surprised by how everything in London seems connected.

The show takes its subject matter seriously to be sure, but there's still time for Kip to have a rat-a-tat conversation with her partner about her pole vaulting days, or for characters to chat about something other than the exposition at hand.

All these threads start to pull together and the convoluted story becomes clearer. That's not to say that the threads wrap up neatly into a little bow - but there is a satisfying ending, of sorts.

For all its faults, Collateral remained gripping to the end.

Although the BBC/Netflix mini-series is packed with interesting characters, it promises far more than it delivers.

Apparently the show will leave you more confused than not, but it's got a really engaging start.

Collateral [is] a superb four-part-thriller... that deftly tackles politics, immigration issues and murky espionage as well as the central crime.

Collateral isn't perfect and has some uneven bits, but it never wastes your time.

This work is sharp, it's engaging, and it's speaking not only to contemporary Britain, but also to a wider Western world that is wrestling with the issues of immigration and asylum.

Ambitious but convoluted British crime drama is violent.
