What to Know

Critics Consensus

Maybe next time, Space Cowboy -- this live-action Bebop has a fun enough crew to spend time with, but it disappointingly replaces the soulfulness of the source material with kitsch.

Somewhere between affection and disappointment sits the willingness to commit, helped along by Kanno's infectious score. The dancing jazz swells alone are enough to persuade diehards to saddle up through its 10-episode mission, such as it is. Go to Full Review

At once well-acted and beautifully produced, but weighed down by lazy directing and aimless writing. It left me heaving in disbelief. Go to Full Review

If something was cool in the original, you can expect the adaptation to make it feel lamer. If something complex or understated, you can expect the adaptation to flatten its meaning. Go to Full Review

ProjectNL @ProjectNL 5d I realy liked it. I don't know the original, but this was entertaining and for todays standards pretty good writing. See more Dave L Jan 16 Enjoyable and well cast See more Cody M Nov 25 This was and excellent adaptation, I am a huge fan of the original and rewatch it every year, the negative reviews on this are purely from the same weird anime elitists who would hate any adaptations. They just can’t understand that this is an adaptation and is not meant to be a true copy, and it does a damn good job of being an adaptation they got the feel and core story of bebop while still making something new and fun. True it doesn’t touch the original in depth and character development but it makes up for it with cinematic mastery and more fast paced fun show appealing to a wider audience. It’s a shame all the bad reviews have made a second season impossible it would’ve been fun to see where they went with the series. In short ignore the bad reviews by the sad and angry people and watch the show and create your own opinion! See more Andy B Jul 21 While fans of the original anime may be disappointed, as a stand alone this show is phenomenal and would appeal to a wide audience. See more Leighton E May 14 20 mins in. It’s already disappointing. Writers clearly haven’t watched the original. Struggling to finish the first episode! So many additions but leaving out the original stuff? Madness. No wonder it got cancelled. See more Silo T Apr 15 If everything about the slower quiet atmosphere and subtlety in not everything being stated towards the viewer constantly was what you enjoyed of the original series, you may not enjoy this show. It keeps many of the same plot points in smaller ways than you'd hope, and completely revises the pacing and chronological order we the viewer witness. It's a drama and a mediocre one at that which isn't that bad. With that said it's hard to not compare it to the more episodic way the original series played with character development constantly on the coat tails until it evolves in climactic ways. The ending is also completely revised. It eliminates a lot of the original themes the story told. Much of the character development takes a heavy shift in direction to when compared to the original show. An adaptation left in the hands of writers who did not want to make a faithful adaptation. The actors did great jobs portraying the characters as written with many moments I deeply enjoyed in the BeBop crews as well as outstanding side characters. The visual departments also did an amazing job capturing much of the gritty noir atmosphere as well as the more technology centric scenes featuring faithful renditions of elements while amplifying them with new models and accompanying visual effects. Outstanding. The sound design in itself was pleasant, communicating the softer moments and juxtaposed chaos of this new busy solar system they inhabit. If you're going to watch it have zero expectations for the story. Even zero may be too much though. See more Read all reviews
