This generation's Upstairs, Downstairs, both in theme - the daily dramas of a titled British family and their many servants - and in stature.

You can't help feeling these actors are having a jolly good time with all this overblown fluff. And so will you.

Watching Downton Abbey is like curling up with a really satisfying book.
September 26, 2010
Compulsively watchable from the get-go, Downton Abbey fulfills the Masterpiece designation more faithfully than just about anything else to grace the PBS showcase in years.

It's simply delicious fun.

September 26, 2010
It is crisp, daffy, intricate fun, a sort of Upstairs Downstairs as conceived by a cross between Angela Thirkell and P.G. Wodehouse.
September 26, 2010
Tonal breaches are what gives the series its vitality, what makes it the playful, irresistible melodrama it is, rather than the stuffy or rote history lesson it might have otherwise been.
