Critics Consensus: "Et Tu, Brute?" ends with a doozy of a cliffhanger that fits perfectly with Empire's soapier tendencies.

The way the show treats Jamal and Skye's brief time together as a positive thing that just "happened," even with that awkward racial identity analogy thrown in, is ultimately refreshing.
I would hazard some predictions about what Empire has in store for us next year, but I have a sinking feeling, given its recycling of season one stock, that we've seen most of the show's tricks.
In the explosive mid-season finale, Rhonda may or may not be alive, Lucious Lyon is removed as CEO of Empire by his youngest son and Cookie Lyon heads back to prison.
What is there to say about Wednesday's winter finale of Empire other than GOOD LORD? After a half-season that was at best uneven and at times actually kind of boring, Lee Daniels and company really pulled out all the stops for "Et Tu, Brute."
I am trying to be hopeful about what's to come on Empire, but this first half was like Kelly Rowland's solo career: it has had its share of bright spots, but I've needed my flashlight to navigate through the darkness more times than I'd like.
As with every episode in the season, even when something devastating happens, everything still came up Jamal.
The show was back to doing what it does best: throwing soap opera-like curveballs that will have you either gasping, or shaking your head at the sheer excess of it all.
If you weren't hooting and hollering the moment the saliva went flying, what the hell are you watching TV for? That's entertainment, folks.
Once again, the Empire is spinning out of control. On tonight's midseason finale, "Et Tu, Brute?," Lucious was challenged perhaps the most he's ever been.
We're left with so many questions. Can Rhonda survive the fall? Will Lucious make good on his threat to kill Hakeem? And most important, as this season continues to go off the rails, will you still be around to watch?
