There's an element of ambiguity with Hawk because he's scared of being hurt, so he puts up these walls that make him seem like a heartless asshole.

Episode two of Fellow Travelers is a nice expansion of the premiere, doubling down on most of the main plot threads, while deepening the emotional beats...It’s not exactly subtle, but thus far subtlety hasn’t been Fellow Travelers strong suit.
