News & Interviews for Giri/Haji: Season 1
Giri/Haji is sharply shot and edited and not afraid of adopting radical devices, like switching into animation for some scenes.
Everything's intertwined, and the fact that the series never becomes overly messy-and manages to keep a rigid focus on its well-drawn characters... is a testament to its craftsmanship.
I've never seen a British show filmed in the UK that is 75% in another language. I've never seen that ambition in a British show before.
Violently stylish, and also plain violent, Giri/Haji is a filial drama crossed with a sprawling, sexy police thriller.
Despite being filled with tangents and B-plot loop-the-loops, Barton has an incredible facility for keeping it all together. Any feeling of being momentarily lost is eventually rewarded with patience.
The resulting tangle is highly stylised (slipping into black and white, animation and at one point what I can only describe as slow-motion interpretative ballet) and unlike anything else I've watched on the BBC.
There is simply nothing else like this anywhere on television.
...all of the cast deserves mention, but space does not permit it. Really good stuff here, despite some bits that simply don't work. Give it a shot; I'm so very glad I did.
...there's something fascinating, and to me kind of heartening, about the idea of old-fashioned character studies starting to demand avant-garde formal complexity from shows that might otherwise have been just some more by-the-numbers genre fare...
[It] cross-pollinates genres - mixing cop show, yakuza thriller, love story, anime and hokey family melodrama, all spiked with bits of offbeat comedy. Giri/Haji is unlike anything else on TV.
Audience Reviews for Giri/Haji: Season 1
3d agoGreat story, set in Tokyo and London. Plenty of twists and turns in the plot to keep interest.
May 04, 2021Excellent. Sharp writing that gets the blend of humour, pathos and hard-hitting drama just right.
Apr 28, 2021This is a very classy, well acted, intelligent and witty show full of drama, action and twists. Things like this don't come along that often, an absolute gem, please can we have another series?
Apr 22, 2021Wonderfully written, wonderfully shot. What a lovely transcontinental crime/drama.
Mar 31, 2021BBC produces compelling stories with complex characters. The longer episode length helps. Wish American tv shows did the same. The contrast between Japan society and British was well done. More like this please!
Mar 28, 2021Overrated. It was okay at best.
Feb 24, 2021Excellent! I enjoyed every second of it. Loved how the plot developed. I am sad to hear that the show was cancelled after its first season. M.
Feb 03, 2021The whole series is wonderful/suspenseful. My favorite scene is in the last episode on the rooftop right after the 'rescue' just beautiful.
Jan 24, 2021Just an amazing show with both visual and verbal attributes that are mesmerizing and the duality of the show goes beyond the parallel locations but is intertwined to the depth of the characters. There are some scenes that just surpass anything that I have seen on TV in recent times if not ever. Just outstanding...
