    Oof, that was Rotten.

    Meh, it passed the time.

Critic Reviews for Giri/Haji Season 1

All Critics (18) | Top Critics (6)

The resulting tangle is highly stylised (slipping into black and white, animation and at one point what I can only describe as slow-motion interpretative ballet) and unlike anything else I've watched on the BBC.

Giri/Haji is sharply shot and edited and not afraid of adopting radical devices, like switching into animation for some scenes.

Oct 17, 2019 | Full Review…

It's complex but often deadpan funny, and then deeply serious about family matters. Visually startling (created by Joe Barton who also wrote for the series Humans), it's like no thriller made in the past decade.

Giri/Haji was packed with quality.

Dec 16, 2019 | Full Review…

[It] cross-pollinates genres - mixing cop show, yakuza thriller, love story, anime and hokey family melodrama, all spiked with bits of offbeat comedy. Giri/Haji is unlike anything else on TV.

An intriguing mystery/family drama that spans continents and mashes together two very different cultures.

If you love gangster thrillers, Giri/Haji is unbeatable.

Oct 25, 2019 | Rating: 5/5 | Full Review…

Giri / Haji is a smart series that rewards your attention (and a bit of a slow start as it builds) as a deeply satisfying story. Its ambiguous ending also somehow feels complete, because the shame part of the narrative has been addressed for everyone

...there's something fascinating, and to me kind of heartening, about the idea of old-fashioned character studies starting to demand avant-garde formal complexity from shows that might otherwise have been just some more by-the-numbers genre fare...

A series with interesting aesthetics. [Full review in Spanish]

Happily, Joe Barton's tinglingly original thriller finished as smartly as it began

Oct 17, 2019 | Rating: 5/5 | Full Review…

Over the course of eight episodes you're bound to find yourselves falling in love with so many of these characters - or at the very least passionately calling for Rodney and Taki to be given their own spin-off series.

Audience Reviews for Giri/Haji: Season 1

I was looking for a new show to watch on netflix, but this one caught my attention. In the first and second episode, i still don't get it and a bit boring, but i get it that's how building the characters. Anddd on the 3rd episode it got me hook, Mann the scene where the albanian mafia throw the cigarettes and try to start a war plus the music wooooowwwwww it make my mouth wont even to shut. Like man the cinematography, the cartoon sequences, the flashbacks-forwards scene without makes me dizzy (some of shows makes me don't like the flashback forward scene) but this one dammmn, i loveeeeee it with all my heart. The relationship between 2 brothers is brilliant, because that's how family is. They have a lot of character but well built, likeee man you should watch this one. And i hope they renew the season 2, this is one of the best series I've watched and have no regrets to binge watch till morning. I would like to send a big applause to the the director, the script writer who wrote it beautifully, the editor who make the show aesthetically pleasant to watch, the animator who draw the cartoon sequence amazingly great. Thank you for brought this best show 🙏🏻🙏🏻 Arigatou gozaimas.

    Just finished episode 4. Exquisite.

Very different from your normal detective show. Watched it all in two sittings
  • Feb 09, 2020
Great cast (mostly, except Mr Abbot who was not particularly convincing or menacing), some excellent acting helps to paper over some extremely bad writing and poor plot logic. (prime example being a famous assassin who freaks our after killing someone on a botched job) The only thing that kept me watching was the charisma of most of the main cast. Also shot very nicely.

Netflix's best damn release ever since Money Heist. Period.
  • Feb 06, 2020
    Superb in every aspect.
  • Jan 30, 2020
Engrossing culture and character studies throughout, showing that all have varying degrees of good and bad characteristics or at least potentials, and choices matter more than we imagine sometimes. Moves along well to a surprising climax. Well worth watching.

If you are into Japanese culture this is a must see! Family, loyalty.. honor.. gripping as well throughout

Simply the best TV season I have watched in quite some time. And that is saying a lot these days. Beautifully shot. Masterfully plotted. Such a tremendous cast. Well-executed concept. I don't know if there will be a second season, but it will be nearly impossible to top this initial season.
