A few holes here and there, but great cinematography.
  • Oct 01, 2021
Great story and characters. Well played.

Minor spoilers. Starts off great like a gritty neo-noir, but dips in quality near the middle episodes. You realize the supposed protagonists are awful people (e.g. Yuto beating an old man) and the action becomes silly (unrealistic gun fights) and the drama becomes melodrama. On top of that, some of the character's personalities are shallow and flat. Kelly Macdonald's talent is wasted; she acts like bystander most of the time, or only reacts to what's happening instead of having agency. Yuto's brother I guess is supposed to be a stoic type but could not be more uninteresting. I don't get the praise for this show.

Absolutely brilliant. A slightly Peter Greenaway flair of great cinematography, change of colours and just gorgeous scene settings - superb editing. The score is rich and purled with perfect application - enough to make me go hunt through the interweb to find some of the music. The mix of media was brave and held up well throughout carrying the script from before during and future. I loved the pop up humour and the slightly unkempt wardrobing. Dabbling in a wide sweep of characters and psychological play offs was captivating. Like a life tapestry and cultural heady train ride. For me the pace was perfect slow delicate but holding. If you get it from the get go then you will love it to the end. Very sad to not have more but looking forward to Joe Barton's next journey. Good part played by himself also.

Very muddled story. Too long. It's a problem when shows have more time than they can fill with an interesting story. Kelly McDonald's character (who looks like an unmade bed) is particularly irritating and not believable as a love interest.

Great story, set in Tokyo and London. Plenty of twists and turns in the plot to keep interest.
  • May 04, 2021
Excellent. Sharp writing that gets the blend of humour, pathos and hard-hitting drama just right.

This is a very classy, well acted, intelligent and witty show full of drama, action and twists. Things like this don't come along that often, an absolute gem, please can we have another series?
  • Apr 22, 2021
Wonderfully written, wonderfully shot. What a lovely transcontinental crime/drama.

BBC produces compelling stories with complex characters. The longer episode length helps. Wish American tv shows did the same. The contrast between Japan society and British was well done. More like this please!
