    Oof, that was Rotten.

    Meh, it passed the time.

Critic Reviews for Giri/Haji Season 1

All Critics (21) | Top Critics (8)

The resulting tangle is highly stylised (slipping into black and white, animation and at one point what I can only describe as slow-motion interpretative ballet) and unlike anything else I've watched on the BBC.

Giri/Haji is sharply shot and edited and not afraid of adopting radical devices, like switching into animation for some scenes.

Oct 17, 2019 | Full Review…

Violently stylish, and also plain violent, Giri/Haji is a filial drama crossed with a sprawling, sexy police thriller.

May 8, 2020 | Full Review…

Despite being filled with tangents and B-plot loop-the-loops, Barton has an incredible facility for keeping it all together. Any feeling of being momentarily lost is eventually rewarded with patience.

Apr 2, 2020 | Full Review…

It's complex but often deadpan funny, and then deeply serious about family matters. Visually startling (created by Joe Barton who also wrote for the series Humans), it's like no thriller made in the past decade.

...all of the cast deserves mention, but space does not permit it. Really good stuff here, despite some bits that simply don't work. Give it a shot; I'm so very glad I did.

...there's something fascinating, and to me kind of heartening, about the idea of old-fashioned character studies starting to demand avant-garde formal complexity from shows that might otherwise have been just some more by-the-numbers genre fare...

A series with interesting aesthetics. [Full review in Spanish]

Feb 10, 2020 | Full Review…

[It] cross-pollinates genres - mixing cop show, yakuza thriller, love story, anime and hokey family melodrama, all spiked with bits of offbeat comedy. Giri/Haji is unlike anything else on TV.

Jan 31, 2020 | Full Review…

An intriguing mystery/family drama that spans continents and mashes together two very different cultures.

Jan 13, 2020 | Full Review…

Over the course of eight episodes you're bound to find yourselves falling in love with so many of these characters - or at the very least passionately calling for Rodney and Taki to be given their own spin-off series.

Giri / Haji is a smart series that rewards your attention (and a bit of a slow start as it builds) as a deeply satisfying story. Its ambiguous ending also somehow feels complete, because the shame part of the narrative has been addressed for everyone

Audience Reviews for Giri/Haji: Season 1

  • Jul 02, 2020
OMG, how did this get 100%. It started off fantastic, but soon hit the typical oil patch where the characters started acting unbelievably and everything got ridiculous. After that it just crashed and burned, and don't even get me started on the contemporary dance scene at the end. Two stars for the beginning that was actually really good.

    best series this year.... brilliant

Great merger of BBC drama and Japanese storytelling. Really enjoyed watch and season 1 leaves you satisfied as well as giving room for a possible season 2. However, it might do well to leave well enough alone.
  • May 30, 2020
Very unique. Very entertaining. More hits than misses. But the angst from the main character got a little old.
  • May 27, 2020
5 stars +. The synopsis does not do it justice. There is violence(Japanese crime families), but there are a variety of in depth relationships, the series goes back and forth in time in a very imaginative way. It is funny, dialog is great, and it culminates in a beautiful choreographed dance on top of a building where all the characters are involved. Filmed in Tokyo and London. Best series that I have watched period.

It's really worth the watch! Loved it.
  • May 24, 2020
This Japanese/Brit crime thriller unfolds piece by piece and draws you into the connected nature of the plot. The ripples caused by events on both sides of the world need your patience at times, but there were some great performances here that made this an enjoyable watch.

This show is a crime show exploring the effects of a Yakuza crime in both England and Japan. It's a bit soapy as it heavily explores the lives of many characters both before and in the context of this crime. Good: Very believable acting Relatively complex story which touches on a lot of topics Great cinematography Bad: Some of the more surreal bits fell flat (the dancing wtf) Story had some bits that broke believability a lot
  • May 20, 2020
little bits and pieces ("dancing on the rooftop" wasn't one of them) didn't work for me. that being said, overall this was OUTSTANDING entertainment.
  • May 08, 2020
Really enjoyed it and have recommended it to many friends and family that felt the same way
