The value of Heaven's Gate: The Cult of Cults lies in its willingness to ask tough questions and sit with the lack of simple answers. Go to Full Review

Viewers may bob in and out during the first few episodes, though it's worth sticking out for the grand finale, as sickening as it is oddly poignant. Go to Full Review

By the end of the four hours, I felt some emotional connection to the cult members and their families and that was Tweel's primary intention, I'm guessing. Getting me to feel that this exploration was ultimately especially perceptive... [It] falls short. Go to Full Review

What The Cult Of Cults does very effectively is tell the story of the organization, showing why it attracted members and held onto them for so long. Go to Full Review

Marc Z @TKDLife 06/24/2021 A fairly in depth look at Marshall Applewhite and the Heaven's Gate Cult. The documentary uses interviews, expert analysis, and archived footage to cover the rise of the cult through the tragic mass suicide event 22 years in the making. It is informative and a look at the sociology of the members. My main criticism of it is that it is a little boring and could have been done in two parts our even one instead of dragging it out over 4. Not much is gained by the length, except to reinforce the essential points and show how odd this entire tragedy was. Additionally, the score throughout is overly dramatic and out of place accompanying most of the details explored. See more Mister M @RT98439280 05/29/2021 Extremely well done; this 4 part series is a very in-depth history about the two founders, the cult's foundations in Christianity and science fiction; but it's also heartbreaking in regard to how people could so senselessly (and seemingly inevitably) sacrifice their lives for such a bizarre "cause". See more greg m @GregFromCos 02/22/2021 The documentary gave a very good overview of Heaven's gate and how they formed. Cult docs are very interesting. Was fascinating how different the leadership was in Heaven's gate, but that may be why they really only had 30-80ish members most of the time. A very good reminder that intelligence is not enough in and of itself to avoid cults. Do wish the Doc would have focused a bit more on the epistemology. Why did Sawyer really think it was true still? Well worth the time. See more scott e @RT99591297 01/30/2021 Great cult documentary. Brings the crazy effectively. Nice length. Enough to settle in and enjoy, but not excessive.
