If Horror's Greatest gets another round, there's definitely lots more turf to cover, and it'd be great to see Shudder go more obscure and get even more specific. Go to Full Review

Omar K @RT83578618 09/17/2024 A survey of horror films jammed packed with references both known and obscure, so even a person with deep knowledge of the genre might see a few (or a lot) of things they aren't familiar with while they revisit "the hits." All of the episodes are strong (so far I have seen four; the fifth, on Stephen King, is yet to come) but for me the stand-out was Japanese Horror. This may be because it was the sub-genre I was least familiar with. Hope Shudder makes more of these. See more Read all reviews

Episode 1 Aired Aug 27, 2024 Tropes & Cliches Creepy houses, murderous rednecks, final girls: horror films often rely on these tried-and-true storytelling devices, and audiences have come to expect them; here are the most common genre tropes and clichés and how modern filmmakers subvert them. Details Episode 2 Aired Sep 3, 2024 Giant Monsters Nearly a century after King Kong first ran amok, images of giant marauding monsters continue to enthrall; Godzilla is hotter than ever, and filmmakers like Bong Joon-ho, J.J. Abrams, and Jordan Peele have all added their unique spins to the genre. Details Episode 3 Aired Sep 10, 2024 Japanese Horror Veering between slow dread and shocking violence, the wild world of Japanese horror has something for everyone; from Ugetsu to Ring, Onibaba to Audition, Tetsuo to Battle Royale: the greatest J-Horror films are essential viewing for horror fans. Details Episode 4 Aired Sep 17, 2024 Horror Comedies Horror comedies make people laugh at things they might recoil from in real life; they come in many flavors, including splatstick (Evil Dead II), high camp (M3GAN), subversive family entertainment (Gremlins) and classics (Shaun of the Dead). Details Episode 5 Aired Sep 24, 2024 Stephen King Adaptations Stephen King's stories attract the world's greatest filmmakers, and have been the basis of over a dozen horror classics - and at least as many failures; many elements need to come together to successfully adapt King on the page to King on the screen.
