"Fresh-Like" serves as an out with the old and in with the new chapter for Issa: a new perspective on work, a new man, and most importantly a new place.
Am I the only person who doesn't like Lyft big tipper, aka Nathan? He makes Issa drop her taco and is surface level in every way. I'm already over his nonsense.
I loved that this episode really narrowed in on these two women and a new level of growth.
When Frieda comes over to talk to Issa about her new assignment to a middle school, Issa has just...had enough. She says she can't do it anymore and quits. Wow. Didn't exactly see that coming. I mean, sure, kinda. But maybe not that abruptly.
We spend far too long watching Issa talk with Nathan...but it drags out way longer than it should and ends up becoming egregiously boring rather than tender.
Daniel who? Sunday's Insecure sent Issa on an impromptu first date that was so flirt-tastic, I almost didn't notice that the episode didn't give us any Kelli.
"Fresh-like" feels like the start of a new Insecure that's no longer focused on world building and is finally telling Issa's story.
In between the fun the pair is having together, Issa also feels vulnerable about the fact that she is passionate about rapping and that she cheated on her ex. *squeals* I've never seen our girl like this, and I'm honestly shook!
The appearance of the mirror strikes a tonic note of introspection, and the ritual of it is a sort of sage-burning. The episode offers a homecoming and a housewarming.
As much fun as it has been to watch her and the other protagonists continuously make awkward and silly mistakes, it has begun to feel a bit like an increasingly frustrating form of déjà vu.
The show's attempt to navigate the nuances and perplexities of black men's misogyny towards black women is a bold and necessary risk.
