Critic Reviews for Killing Eve Season 1

All Critics (101) | Top Critics (35)

What distinguishes Killing Eve isn't just that Villanelle is a categorically transgressive female character; it's also that she's interesting.

Sep 9, 2019 | Full Review…

Executive producer Phoebe Waller-Bridge subverts every male-centered trope of espionage thrillers as Eve and the assassin play a deadly cat-and-mouse game fueled by their mutual fascination with each other.

[Jodie Comer] plays Villanelle, a gorgeous, magnetic, sociopathic serial killer, all gleeful brutality and spite, in Killing Eve, 2018's best TV show... It's a piercing jolt of a performance that hits you like a hairpin to the eyeball.

Sep 20, 2018 | Full Review…

Killing Eve is completely delightful, and I think now that Waller-Bridge really might, after all, be the best thing to happen to women and TV since Sarah Jane Smith snuck aboard the Tardis in 1973.

Sep 20, 2018 | Full Review…

The story hurtles along at a fast pace, shedding characters along the way. You'll think, oh man, they can't do that. And then they do. And the show just gets better.

Jun 28, 2018 | Full Review…

Killing Eve is subversive at its most basic level, taking the classic good-guy-chases-villain template and placing two women in the primary roles.

It manages this wonderful blend of wit, humor, and smarts while also being terrifying and engaging.

The British-made drama is intriguingly strange, brilliantly cast, darkly humorous, and rivetingly suspenseful.

By the time Killing Eve found what passed for a heart, way late in the day, mine had virtually stopped beating.

Thrilling, funny, weird. I love the two female leads in this show but the entire cast is engaging. Really loved the show

I just started this show and instantly regretted of not watching it earlier!! What an AMAZING show! Now onto season 2 and 3. Hopefully season will get filmed soon.

Whilst I liked the comedy, and I liked the more serious storyline. I found the mixture of both in this story to be a strange blend, which took me out of the show very quickly. I was really looking forward to the show after hearing how wonderful it was. Sadly this ones not for me.

There's something really fresh about this despite the whole spies and assassins thing being so overdone. The show is really stolen by the fantastic acting of Jodie Comer. Her character is the most fascinating, being both chilling and darkly comedic as a stylish psychopath with a weird fascination for the spy trying to track her down. It's great to see multiple and varied strong female characters throughout as well. If seriously dark comedy isn't your thing, you might want to stay away.

Killing Eve Season 1 | Detailed note: 9.6
  • Jun 22, 2020
Oh and Comer are fantastic but it's written like Ozarks: lazy plot twists where things conveniently fall into place. After the 1st season I've started to really dislike how Eve is portrayed: kind of a clumsy, ignorant and self-absorbed female Inspector Clouseau except everyone loves her - esp. her unnaturally emasculated husband. The unrealistic dynamics of how things play out is what defeats an otherwise compelling fiction. Season 2 is even more contrived and so I doubt I'll bother going further.

I was disappointed. The reason I started watching Killing Eve was its noticeably high review score. I had to finish all 8 episodes of season 1 only because I didn't want to be left with the feeling of not getting my ass wiped after taking a shit. The acting was good, and that was it. Everything else was horrible, especially the writing, background music, and camera angles and operations, and most importantly transitions. Some episodes were worse than others, and the gap was huge, I guess due to multiple directors and writers. Bottom line, go watch it if you want to be left feeling fuck I just wasted my time and energy watching a mediocre piece of shit.

Fresh, weird, strange and absolutely incredible. Not one wasted moment. Incredibly good acting with outstanding storylines. Fantastic series.

This is probably the best tv show I have ever seen, Oh and Comer are absolutely fabulous together, and the story is fascinating and unpredictable.
