Once you get beyond its derivative aspects, this East German revenge thriller is a lot of fun, thanks largely to the central performance by Jella Haase... Go to Full Review

If you’re missing the high-spirited high jinks of Killing Eve, with its idiosyncratic spies, odd alliances and steadily mounting body count, the peppy eight-part Kleo might help to fill the gap. Go to Full Review

Kleo may not be the first to do it, but it is nevertheless an entertaining, highly stylised and cinematic adventure. Go to Full Review

Kleo tries to make a formula that captures everything that supposedly can be done, yet forgets that in order for it to make sense, it needs to mix up something of its own. And it almost achieves it. But doesn't. [Full review in Spanish] Go to Full Review

Originality is overrated, not to mention all but impossible. What matters is the detail, the tone, the handling. If you get those things right, and Kleo has, then your audience will forgive you any amount of cliché in the storyline. Go to Full Review

Kleo is a creative, character-driven master stroke. It’s a revenge story but also a woman trying to reclaim her life as two countries become one. It is gorgeous to look at and cleverly shot, and achingly atmospheric. Go to Full Review

Kalissa H. @kali_416 May 9 Descent show, quite enjoyable. I really liked Kleo (the character) and how ruthless she was at times. See more J P @NotZeppoMarx May 4 This is supposed to be 1987. NOTHING about it is 1987. Someone was lazy and didn't do their homework. Women had BIG hair. They still wore pantyhose. You never saw a woman in a dress with bare legs. Women's clothes had shoulder pads. The make up is wrong. Men's haircuts were short. Men were clean shaven unless they had handle bar moustaches with goatees (half did). Men's shirts were not open to the navel. Boxer briefs hadn't even been invented. I could go on and on. As a historical piece, it's wholly inaccurate. If you can ignore all of that, it is at least watchable. See more Devon G @RT18906392 Apr 19 One of the best spy shows I’ve ever watched! See more Loola R @Loola Jul 21 Series starts out okay, but devolves into quite a mess. Character and plot inconsistencies become jaw-droppingly moronic. For instance, the main character leaves her big suitcase of cash where her live-in idiot oddball roommate easily finds it. And at the penultimate episode, when she confronts him about stealing it, rather than get angry, she embraces him. Excuse me...WHAT???!!! And there is too much of this sort of thing; too many slap-in-your-face unbelievable character turns. Sorry, but this show is an insult to anyone with intelligence. Oh...one last thing: This character of "Sven," who's supposed to be funny and charming is, to put it simply, not. The actor is almost unwatchable with his mugging, and struggle to be endearing. See more Andrea A @Woland 04/26/2025 As it seems to be the case with many German productions, this is targeted to a young, excitable, mindless audience, which is deeply irritating to me, maybe because, unfortunately, I'm none of the above. The East/West Berlin settings are stereotyped to the nth degree See more Olivia R @RT96726685 04/23/2025 The short Netflix original TV series Kleo was surprisingly different from what I anticipated going into it. Set in the 1980s in Germany, it takes us through the time before the collapse of the Berlin wall to the aftermath of it, through the experience of an East German Stasi, Kleo Straub. The show was released in 2022 and stars German actress Jella Hasse, who seems to be most well-known from her role as Kleo in the show. I thought the show was mostly entertaining and eventful, however some parts were hard to watch or rather graphic. This was expected though, as the plot follows Kleo as she is falsely imprisoned for treason, released after the Berlin wall falls, and then her journey to exact her revenge on the ones who wronged her. I could get behind the concept, as it seems realistic and I do love when characters get their share of justice in film and literature. Also, the idea is very creative and original, so I applaud the creators of the show for going against the grain so to speak and producing something without such overdone themes like addiction or high school drama, to name a few popular ones. Unfortunately however, the show mostly fell short for me. I found every single character to be extremely unlikeable, which makes it a much harder watch. Specifically, I was immediately unimpressed by Kleo Straub’s character, simply because Netflix utilizes the “badass cutthroat seductive woman” persona far too often in my opinion. I genuinely believe this backfires on Netflix because instead of it appearing cool or attractive, it only causes me to become bored with watching yet another woman described as “hot” but “dangerous”. Not only was this unimpressive to me, but it was also almost comical in some of the dialogue and the way her scenes were shot. For example, about halfway through the second episode when Kleo hunts down one of the women who betrayed her, she performs a bizarre dance when she enters the room the woman is hiding in as a way to taunt her, before inevitably killing her by swiftly pushing her against a sharp protruding object on the wall. This all happens not before, however, the woman stabs Kleo in the left shoulder (barely eliciting a response). Kleo then walks calmly out of the building barely acknowledging her bleeding wound and proceeds to stitch it up herself with barely a grimace. Maybe I am being too critical, but this doesn’t entertain me as I’m sure it’s meant to. I honestly find these parts pretentious and unrealistic, almost humorous even because of how pretentious it is. I must say the show does keep you entertained with its constant movement and action; there seems to be hardly any empty space where it might lose the audience. I did like the color themes too, they could be really bright and vivid, a hallmark of the 80s and something I always appreciate in films as I find it more attractive to look at bright, saturated colors. Ultimately, Kleo on Netflix is a good show to kill time with if you’re not overly analytical and critical. It has an original theme and keeps you entertained with its action-packed scenes and lively visuals. However, if you are like me and tend to pick up on exaggerated elements and pretentious aspects, and consequently become uninterested, then I probably wouldn’t recommend watching Kleo as a worthwhile pastime.
