Luther: Season 5 Reviews

May 10, 2021
Idris Elba and Neil Cross have done it again, in a gut-wrenching and sharply written fifth season of the fan-favorite detective drama. Well-written characters and continuity like this can carry any plot and cover any flaws.

One stab of humour, and the whole thing would deflate like a whizzing balloon. In the yawning moments of a new year, though, you can understand the appeal of a show that is equal parts grit and syrup, spook stories and implausible twists.

Season five of Luther is a non-stop adrenaline ride that refuses to let up for even a moment. It is raw and resonating, cutting straight down to the nerve.

This latest installment of Luther... is truly for the hardcore fans and for those who plan to tune in with the sound off.

It's all a bit much, but if it weren't, it wouldn't be Luther.

Tautly paced, intriguing, and full of even more personal stakes, the season ends tragically and beautifully in its own way.

Luther is at its worst, and at its best, when it is overbearing in its pessimism. The series puts its characters through the meat grinder...by design, Luther bums the viewer out.

Two of the hottest stars on cable TV are back together: Idris Elba and Ruth Wilson as his ex-girlfriend Alice. But wasn't she presumed dead? So we thought, but now she's back, bad as ever!
June 17, 2019
It's been four years since the two-episode fourth season of Luther, and nine years since Ruth Wilson's Alice Morgan got a full-fledged arc in a Luther season, which may be why season five is the best Luther season since at least the second.

Nailed It!

"Luther" is so well-done that even moments that suspend belief come across as stylish and disturbing.
June 4, 2019
Elba has referred to "Luther" as his James Bond. If there is another chapter, the franchise needs a reboot.

In its fifth season, the series does little more for viewers than leave them numb.

June 3, 2019
The fifth season -- for perhaps the first time -- feels as if it's gone back to this well once too often.
June 3, 2019
This new season maintains a consistent tension throughout its run and even when the creeps are familiar, series creator Neil Cross frosts them with a layer of sinister that feels impossible to duplicate or, if not that, at least would be tough to attempt.
June 3, 2019
It also reunites Elba with Wilson, affording the title character a key relationship that, oddly, works as a necessary leavening agent to a show that can sometimes feel dismally bleak.
June 3, 2019
This Luther feels a bit more back-to-basics, if still winkingly aware of its excesses.

June 3, 2019
The show lives off the tension between Cross's grand-guignol theatrics and Elba's immensely world-weary, endearing performance as Luther.

Once you get the feel again for the rhythm, logic and, yes, even poetry of this series, you are reminded what an edgy, mad, dark, dramatic ride it can be.

This mixed bag go-around is more substantial than the short, fourth season that aired all in one night in 2015.
