Critics Consensus

Jason Clarke and Patricia Arquette are a magnetizing pair who make it worthwhile to watch Murdaugh: Death in the Family, a true-crime dramatization that narrows its grizzly focus on this family's downward spiral and truly delivers.

Clarke steals the show as the pill-popping Murdaugh patriarch, himself a product of a rotten family tree. Go to Full Review

The narrowness of focus is refreshing in our era of excessive therapyspeak. Go to Full Review

The miniseries is well-made but feels a little anticlimactic. Hamstrung between the facts and the urge to make the show dramatically compelling, the writers never manage to create interesting interior lives for the characters. Go to Full Review

Even if you saw the revelations and news about the Murdaugh trial as it unfolded on the news, you will find a lot to keep you entertained as you watch this series, but it will work a lot better for those who don’t know how it ends. Go to Full Review

An important cautionary tale about the perils of unchecked power and how, if one sweeps problems within a family under the rug, they can... spiral out of control... Adding to this more human approach are the fiercely authentic performances. Go to Full Review

Devin S. @Katosepe May 20 Dramatization of true crime is always in a really precarious position but Murtaugh: Death in the Family goes too far for good taste. Everyone knows these shows take dramatic license with conversations and character motivations, but this show has entire episodes where everything is pure fiction, even making up new crimes that the Murtaugh's commited in the process. It changes the order of events, creating a fiction where their housekeeper Gloria defended Paul from the boat crash when in reality, she had already been dead for a year. It portrays the parents of the other teens as pandering sycophants. It overly glamourizes Paul and Maggie without any evidence. It goes out of its way to show us that Alec Murdaugh is bad at sex. It's gratuitous and inventive to the point of non-reality. These are real people being portrayed and no message about how "it's dramatized" at the beginning of each episode justifies the flaunting of that responsibility. See more Chadd J @RT99579624 Feb 8 The acting was fantastic, every character both looked and played their parts very well. What really hurt the show was they took out all of the stuff that made it feel more real and exciting. I watched the documentary and it was fantastic and this show felt like a huge edit of it. They took out all of the conflict that made the family the way they are. Especially with his younger son Paul. The show removed all of his stuck up attitude that he used to rule his friends. They also added fluff episodes that did not add to the plot of the show and they felt like episode waster just to make it longer than it needed to be. It started to get slow and boring. It saving grace were the last couple of episodes when all of the conflict started coming together. This series is a classic case of less is so much more. See more Tuba K @Khan20 Feb 6 Great Casting! Actors did an incredible job! Jason Clarke and Patricia Arquette were perfect for the roles. I binge-watched through. Definitely must-see. Wont be disappointed! See more Agnes B @RT37224787 Dec 25 I listened to the Murdaugh Murders podcast since right after the murders of Maggie & Paul. This show is fantastic and I highly recommend listening to the full, original podcast by Mandy Mattney. The actors in this show are fantastic! I loved this production and it captured the real life people/victims perfectly. See more Steve B. @EebsMovies Dec 13 It seemed to portray the Murdaugh’s as positively as possible. They tried to kind of clear Buster in Stephen Smith’s murder, which seems a major stretch. Same as the murders in the kennel. Many details of that murder & the investigation were omitted that was incriminating to the family. That said, it wasn’t exactly a POSITIVE light shed on them, but I coulda & shoulda been even darker, as crazy as that sounds. I’m on the last episode & they still haven’t touched on Alec shooting himself in the head, then trying to blame a “friend”. See more Brian D @Brianwd2 Dec 12 76%. Enjoyed the live action version having known the story. Good acting. Solid watch. Crazy how he committed fraud at his family business along with everything else that he did. 1/5 rewatch. No real need to rewatch See more Read all reviews
