Critics Consensus

Treating the franchise's past with an overweening reverence while padding out its new cast with cloying sidekicks, this National Treasure spinoff tumbles over the edge of satisfaction.

Takes its predecessors’ historical treasure-hunting adventure and gives it an insufferable tween spin. Go to Full Review

The opening episodes have their moments, but it’s less something to treasure than at best mildly enjoy. Go to Full Review

Half the fun of this genre is in the sheer satisfaction to be gleaned by watching someone figure out seemingly impossible things and making it seem as easy as pie. That’s something that “Edge of History” offers by the bucketful. Go to Full Review

The action advances through coincidences that are too coincidental—and the puzzles, which form the core of the film franchise, seem to be afterthoughts. Some of the characters’ actions feel contrived or simply don’t make sense. Go to Full Review

What Edge of History does well is to update the groundwork of the franchise for a new generation, and expand the boundaries of its treasure hunting by acknowledging that there is more to America than just the United States. Go to Full Review

Kurt L @KurtLang Aug 25, 2026 I think I'm being generous with two stars, but one star would be a bit unfairly harsh. Basically, this is a badly written made-for-tv mini series. There are so many flaws you run out of fingers and toes on each episode while counting them. Like when they somehow get to the basement in Graceland, and yet the hangers and clothes are back in front of the elevator door when a guard arrives. Who put them back? That's just one of many. And the overly used, "What would be the dumbest thing a character can do?". Which is followed by, "Okay, let's do that!". Such as, a cell phone rings. Liam is told in very plain English, "Don't answer that!" Apparently not skilled at interpreting a three word sentence, he answers the phone anyway, putting both persons in the room in more danger than they already were. A gave up trying to keep track of the pregnant pauses in the dialogue where the characters would just stare at each other. Watch it if you must, but there's a reason there was only 1 season. The suspense, action, storyline, and character development were outstanding. The connections to ancient history throughout the Americas were fascinating and kept me completely engaged from beginning to end. There were moments that genuinely brought tears to my eyes, and the show knew exactly when to build tension and when to deliver emotional impact. The young cast did an incredible job, and Catherine Zeta-Jones was fantastic as the anti-hero. Every character felt important to the story, and the writing was thoughtful, well-paced, and clearly well-researched. What made the series especially meaningful to me was its focus on the history and cultures of the Americas. Growing up learning about Hernán Cortés, the conquistadors, the Aztec Empire, the Maya civilization, and the many Indigenous cultures of the region, I felt a strong personal connection to the story. The series reminded me that ther See more Bella T @RT71773010 May 31, 2026 To be honest, I think that this show messed up the movies as well. Making Agent Hendricks the main villain is absolutely stupid. In the movies, there was no sign that he actually is a Salazar or a main antagonist. Why is he suddenly the main antagonist? This just ruins the whole story plot line because if they are making a third movie, it means Agent Sadusky and Agent Hendricks won’t be in the movie cause they are dead. (Even if Hendricks was alive, he is technically a traitor because of the whole series) Personally, it would have been better if they made the series separate to the movies. Also why is Billie so invested in Jess? I know that she wants to find the treasure but this is stocking a random stranger. Call me overreacting but this just doesn’t make sense.
