Ruby Red Handed: Stealing America’s Most Famous Pair Of Shoes feels a touch padded, even though it’s only 88 minutes. But it’s still a fun story with a lot of twists. Go to Full Review

TheMovieSearch R @TheMovieSearch Nov 30 Ruby Red Handed: Stealing America’s Most Famous Pair of Shoes (2025) This 2025 documentary is all about one of the strangest and most fascinating true-crime stories in Hollywood history — the theft of Judy Garland’s iconic Wizard of Oz ruby red slippers. These weren’t replicas. They were the actual pair Garland wore while filming the 1939 masterpiece, the most famous shoes in cinema history. The story begins in Minnesota, where collector Michael Shaw loaned the slippers to the Judy Garland Museum for the annual festival. Tragically, they were stolen under his watch, and Shaw was devastated. The investigation stretched on for years — nearly two decades — and what started as a small-town mystery grew into a massive case involving the Grand Rapids Police Department, the FBI, and even federal prosecutors. For 13 years, the trail ran cold, until a major break finally set the stage for the slippers’ recovery. Almost 20 years later, the shoes were finally returned to Shaw. By then in his 80s, he decided to take them on a farewell tour so fans could see them one last time before he parted with them. In 2025, they went up for auction, selling for an astonishing $28 million. To this day, the identity of the buyer remains unknown. The documentary does a fantastic job weaving together the crime, the recovery, and the cultural significance of the slippers themselves. It also takes time to show Judy Garland’s legacy, including her roots in Grand Rapids, where she was born Frances Gumm. For fans of The Wizard of Oz, seeing these shoes treated as both sacred artifacts and the subject of a decades-long heist is fascinating. There’s also a bittersweet note. The Judy Garland Museum desperately wanted to reclaim the slippers so they could remain in her hometown, but they simply couldn’t compete with the staggering auction price. Meanwhile, some of the men involved in the theft were never prosecuted before their deaths, while others were eventually arrested — but even justice itself felt incomplete. What hit hardest was Michael Shaw’s emotional journey. He loved these slippers more than anything, and losing them for so many years was torment. Yet in the end, he found closure, and the shoes were preserved for future generations. As a documentary, Ruby Red Handed is both heartfelt and enthralling. It blends history, true crime, and Hollywood nostalgia into a story that almost begs to be turned into a feature film. Imagine a movie that shows the theft, the FBI hunt, the legacy of The Wizard of Oz, and the worldwide fascination with Judy Garland — it would be a cinematic goldmine. Until then, this documentary stands as a beautifully crafted look at how one pair of shoes captured the hearts, minds, and imaginations of millions. Dorothy Gale’s ruby slippers continue to sparkle, and Judy Garland’s legacy lives on forever. She oversees a deeply unethical manipulation of documentary tools, ranging from staged speakerphone calls (funny how they all happen during the same filming session at the same location with the same lighting and wardrobe!), to pretend interviews long after the case wrapped up, as if happening during the ongoing investigation. This kind of manipulation takes the audience for fools, and we deserve better. Add to that every cliche we suffer through, from digital pizzicato strings to hammer a musical tone of quirkiness, to endlessly expanding minimal information for a longer running time. It's a disgrace for the program to branded with ABC News after Committee Films scored their lucrative distribution contract, but then again, it's Disney who's cutting and cashing everyone's checks. Once again, we've been played. See more Read all reviews
