Critic Reviews for Sex and the City Season 1

All Critics (28) | Top Critics (14)

What's refreshing about Sex and the City is that it pushes to a darkly comic extreme... More social satire than sitcom, it looks openly at relationships steeped in ambivalence, fear, and the games people play.

The true power of the SATC girl squad has only been realised in the show's extraordinary durability.

Jun 12, 2018 | Full Review…

Though stylishly directed, Sex and the City isn't especially funny, and it isn't as campy as Melrose Place in its prime.

Apr 16, 2018 | Full Review…

From the constant smoking to the constant whining, Star, who wrote several of the scripts, has again given his actors dialogue and plot lines that make it virtually impossible for them to do anything but laboriously go through the motions.

People watched Carrie Bradshaw, complete with her anxiety, fits of insecurity, and complex emotional needs, and thought, She's psycho. I watched her in her worst moments and instead thought, I'm normal.

Jun 28, 2018 | Full Review…

Sex and the City was a lovely, imperfect, myopic dream invented, like most television shows, in a writers' room.

Jun 5, 2018 | Full Review…

Nearly Seinfeldian in its ability to recreate the strange landscape of New York City with sharp insights and hilariously dead-on character portraits.

Jun 8, 2018 | Full Review…

As Carrie would say, I couldn't help but wonder: will the shows we consider progressive today be equally as dated and cringeworthy in 2038?

Jun 6, 2018 | Full Review…

A show that was simultaneously progressive and regressive... Still, I return to it.

Jun 4, 2018 | Full Review…

Nothing scares a certain type of man more than art that isn't for him, and Sex And The City was always, unapologetically, for women. This, too, is a good thing.

Jun 25, 2018 | Full Review…

A brilliant, daring, pioneering show... what was most striking about seeing it again was its sharpness. The lines crackle with sly wit.
