Shardlake’s sheltered life as a lawyer is turned upside down when Cromwell instructs him to investigate the murder of one of his commissioners at a monastery in the remote town of Scarnsea. The commissioner was gathering evidence to close the monastery and it is now imperative for Cromwell’s own political survival that Shardlake both solves the murder and closes the monastery. He leaves Shardlake in no doubt that failure is not an option. Cromwell insists that he is accompanied by Jack Barak to Scarnsea, where the duo are met with hostility, suspicion and paranoia by the monks who fear for their future and will seemingly stop at nothing to preserve their order.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

Well acted if a bit unconvincing in its verisimilitude, Shardlake's fast pace keeps it from feeling like a dry tutoring lesson on Tudors intrigue.

With a window of a few days and a constrained budget, the show doesn’t have the immersive breadth of this year’s breakthrough period smash, Shogun, but the foreboding air and rogues’ gallery of monks make this more than a mere whodunit. Go to Full Review

I feared that Shardlake would serve up the Tudor era's usual cavalcade of castles, codpieces, clopping horses and quasi-Shakespearean lingo – "Prithee, stop, sirrah!" But to my surprise this odd, beautifully acted show pulled me in. Go to Full Review

The premise is excellent and the set-up compelling... [But] the show slips into something muddier and more generic. Stabilising the scales between history and mystery is a challenge, then, and one that Shardlake just barely balances. Go to Full Review

Within life's rich pageant, there's nothing quite as enticing as the tapestry of history and our collective relationship to its most prominent narratives. Go to Full Review

The dark and moody series offers viewers a compelling murder mystery while staying true to the religious politics of the Tudor era. Go to Full Review

This new series goes a long way to doing the books justice. Arthur Hughes as Shardlake maintains a satisfyingly ambiguous expression in which lofty contempt vies with deep sympathy. Go to Full Review

Nick R @RT67605548 Aug 2 The books were outstanding in every respect. The film was so different. The main character was old wise and brilliant with a subservient sidekick. The film has a young main character with a cocky sidekick. The author would be horrified. It’s so disappointing m. Book was outstanding. Film average. Main character is nothing like the book person apart from his back. Just so disappointing. A real waste of a magnificent book. Worst adaptation I have ever seen. See more Chris D @RT32302738 Jul 23 I was absolutely glued to this and sorry to hear there won't be another season. Great storyline and acting. I think if this continued, the audience would grow as news of it got out. I do love history, especially the Tudor times so this was a bonus for me. See more John C @JC00773202 Jun 18 The setting is gorgeous, the acting is hit-and-miss, and the basic mystery element is intriguing, thanks to strong source material. What takes me out of it is that this production has gone down the same route as season 2 of Wolf Hall with its ludicrous ideologically-driven casting decisions. When we arrive in a sleepy medieval monetary or village and see that the demographics of both are those of modern-day London, immersion is immediately shattered. See more Jimmy P @Gloatbridge 06/14/2025 Very much Disney Shardlake. I loved all the books. I too thought the casting choices poor and the overall feel antiseptic and Hollywood. Big sets, rolling East European landscapes and CGI rarely make for a better show. Film star good looks Hunchback. More at home on TmZ than swinging around Notre Dame. Most disappointing - a Jack Barak who is more crafty cockney Artful Dodger than Cromwellian henchman. Reminiscent of Tommy Steele in Half a Sixpence. The color blind casting is as distracting as always in a historical piece. Certainly dilutes the racial tensions normally swirling around Brother Guy. I love Sean Bean, but as Thomas Cromwell? See more Andrew D @RT24350933 09/07/2024 The sets are quite well done as is the costuming. But the acting is pretty terrible. It’s like a TEMU produced version of masterpiece theater. Only made it halfway through the second episode See more Chris T @RT47053626 07/28/2024 Great show. Atmospheric, beautifully shot and strong writing make this worth a watch. Definitely requires a second season to round out the characters. See more Read all reviews
