Wealthy, young-at-heart business owner Edward Stratton III is stunned to discover his brief marriage several years ago produced a son, Richard Bluedhorn-Stratton, now 12 and standing in Edward's living room, wanting to live with the father he never knew. Although Edward's first impulse is to send Ricky to boarding school, he soon relents and let his son move in with him and Kate, his love-struck secretary. Also on Edward's staff, at various times during the series, are Leonard Rollins, his lawyer, and his peevish business manager, Dexter Roosevelt Stuffins, whose nephew, Alfonso, eventually appears on the scene and becomes Ricky's new best friend.

Mike P @RT77437476 06/01/2023 The pitch for this show was "Arthur meets Oliver". Clumsy wish fulfilment fantasy on the one hand wants Ricky and Edward to feel like the boy's version of The Gilmore Girls; like they're both so young and hip and they almost seem more like brothers. And that's HALF the time; the other half of the time it's falling into traditional sitcom stereotypes; like pretending they're this perfect nuclear family ... But the whole thing feels contrived. If Edward was such a great man; such a great father; why didn't he track his son down sooner? Why isn't Ricky mad at Edward for ditching him for ten years? How come they meet for the first time when Ricky's 10; and then instantly they congeal like they're Ward and Beaver Cleaver? Like the closest father and son ever? Doesn't make sense. There should have been an awkward couple years in there to start. We're supposed to believe Edward is this arrested development manchild in the pilot; riding around on huge toy trolley-cars and the like; but by the middle of season one he's suddenly acting like the most old fashioned traditional father ever. Doesn't make sense. And Norman Lear knows this is a far-fetched, silly premise! I mean this is really just an all white version of Different Strokes actually.
