Critic Reviews for Strange Angel Season 1

All Critics (17) | Top Critics (8)

Strange Angel could develop into an engrossing adventure... but it's too content early on to dwell on the mundane instead of truly embrace the strange.

Nice-looking production that needs -- please excuse the cheesy pun -- a lot more rocket fuel.

A reasonably engaging slow burn.

If you're not expecting an immediate bang, the production design and scripts by series creator Mark Heyman (Black Swan) paint an absorbing picture of 1930s Los Angeles, its landscapes and its mores.

It might not work as an elevator pitch, but [Jack] Reynor's brash performance keeps the fuel flowing long enough for a viewer's curiosity to take over.

Strange Angel gets off to a slow, grinding start... In today's 500-scripted TV series environment, it's too big an ask for producers to insist on viewer patience.

An intriguing case study in ambition, experimentation, and self-actualization through sex magick.

The retelling of this story requires a worthy and weird vehicle, and Strange Angel appears up to the task.

Cult rituals, weird sex in intriguing period biography.

Stream it. The performances are all solid, and Rupert Friend is fun to watch as usual.

Jun 18, 2018 | Full Review…

I can say that, on nothing more than an unfulfilled promise and a few well-performed weirdos, I'm sold enough to keep watching this genre-shifting historical fiction -- though I'm not devout enough to spill blood yet.

Jun 14, 2018 | Rating: 7.7/10 | Full Review…

Strange Angel is equally a biopic about a stubborn optimist and a commentary on the trying times in which he existed, and it's substantially more compelling when it's the latter.

Audience Reviews for Strange Angel: Season 1

Soft core porn with a cover story. Simple recipe: create an interesting story and then inject it with as much boundary-pushing sex as we can. No thanks. Major scientific studies have already shown how watching this kind of stuff literally damages our brains, emotional-wiring, ability for relational intimacy, etc ( has ALL the scientific study citations any objective person could use). But the bottom line is CBS has a recipe that is proven to sell subscriptions. Sex sells. So while the scientific sector warns, the entertainment sector injects shows with more and more of this stuff. The things we'll do to our viewers for a buck. I'll pass.

Fascinating story. Great mixture of science and the supernatural. Everybody that I introduce to this is instantly hooked.
