In a small Alpine village, a group of men, women and children is in a state of confusion as they try to return to their homes after years of being away. What they don't know is that no one is expecting their arrival because they have been dead for several years. Upon returning, they realize that their friends and family have moved on to the next stages of their lives since the now-returning souls passed on. Coinciding with their reappearance is a series of murders that bears a chilling resemblance to those of a serial killer from the past.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

A pleasant change from typically gory zombie shows, The Returned is a must-see oddity that's both smart and sure to disturb.

Besides the scenery, what's best here are the characters, and their lives -- or unlives -- of quiet desperation. Go to Full Review

The Returned...moved glacially but packed a lot of story into its atmosphere-saturated opener. Go to Full Review

Sallie S @Opinionator Sep 20 I watched Episode One of Season One. Got bored. Ejected the DVD. The French are too pretentious to tell a good story. It's rare for me to watch a French movie or TV series all the way through. I do not understand the Critics/100% and the Audience/93% ratings. Are they trying to prove how arty-farty sophisticated they are? See more Bruce M @BruceMc Aug 23 Excellent eight-episode season: mysterious, haunting. Excellent script, cast, direction and editing. Questions are left unanswered, but this ambiguity adds to the effectiveness of the series. Emmy Award winner for best series. Unfortunately, they decided to do a season two.... See more Chris F Jul 22 Beautifully shot. That’s the best thing I can say. After watching EP2 I was still so bored that I used Google to find out how it ends. After reading I am happy I did not waste more time on this. See more james o Mar 29 this show ranges from the classics of Romero to Twin Peaks. See more Steve T 10/09/2023 One of the best single seasons of television I have ever seen. Season 1 is a masterpiece. It's as close to perfect as you can get in a full season of TV. Season 2 is great as well, It just leans a bit more into weirdness (in a good way) leaving a lot open to interpretation which might not be everyone's cup of tea. Can't recommend this show enough. See more 06/13/2020 This show has such great reviews I went in with far too high of expectations. Les Revenants is beautifully filmed TV series with excellent visuals, and overall good acting, but there is little substance beneath the style. It is like the creators had a lot of ideas for cinematically striking scenes and put them all in a blender. I enjoyed it until about halfway through, when I started to realize the series was going nowhere. The character development was stagnating. Each episode introduced new puzzling elements that were never resolved, and often not even mentioned again. By the end what was billed as "not your average zombie show" had devolved into exactly that, with a creepy demon-zombie-leader causing havoc with no justification. I believe shows can be character-driven, or plot-driven, or even theme-driven (though this one is hard to pull off), but they can't be "none of the above." Les Revenants is... cinematography driven? At least, that's the strongest aspect of the show. It has neither well-developed characters, nor a satisfying plot, nor anything in particular to say. Unfortunately, good cinematography alone does not make for a good show. See more Read all reviews
