In a small Alpine village, a group of men, women and children is in a state of confusion as they try to return to their homes after years of being away. What they don't know is that no one is expecting their arrival because they have been dead for several years. Upon returning, they realize that their friends and family have moved on to the next stages of their lives since the now-returning souls passed on. Coinciding with their reappearance is a series of murders that bears a chilling resemblance to those of a serial killer from the past.

Though The Returned's new season isn't as instantly engaging and mesmerizing as its first, it has found ways to still ground its story in the realm of heightened reality, making it that much more frightening. Go to Full Review

It also feels as if Gobert and company are pawing around in the dark, looking for a way to extend The Returned and not coming up with anything other than to further puzzle the viewer. Go to Full Review

It's all very complicated, but at the same time easy to follow and terribly mesmerizing and haunting. Go to Full Review

A large part of what makes The Returned so compelling is that it unfolds like fairytales used to before they were Disney-fied, imagining what might really happen if we were granted our deepest wish. Go to Full Review

The Returned-if it is over-created two phenomenal seasons of emotionally impactful, fascinating and slow-building suspense that paid off beautifully in its final episode. Go to Full Review

The thing about this show is that the mystery is so existential and ever-present that the feeling of "not knowing" becomes pure atmosphere. And that's appealing. Go to Full Review

Bruce M @BruceMc Aug 23 Compared to the excellence of the first season, season two is a huge disappointment: new characters who don't really advance the story, plotlines that go nowhere, and a cheesy, cheap, soap-opera feel to it. Plays like the show-runners didn't know how to end it; ambiguity is good if it's well-thought out and the audience has something to ponder. However, this is just a mess. See more Al R 05/31/2023 I enjoyed season 1 but season 2 ruined the series. The more returned that were added the less interested I became. Useless characters. Watched what I could of episode 4 and gave up. Deleted from list See more 03/22/2020 Even better than the first season, but there's a lot that is unexplained/unresolved at the end, including the identity of Victor and Helen, and how they wound up at the town right before the dam breaks. Despite that, there's enough resolution to make for a satisfying conclusion. See more 02/26/2020 About the french version: It feels as the screenwriters are pawing around in the dark. The history is full of holes from any point of view. See more 02/24/2020 Since the first episode I had the feeling that the screenwriters had no idea of what they were writing about. They managed to keep the hype during the first season, when they had not the problem to solve the mystery they offered to the audience. . The second season is just a mean to exploit the success dishonestly gained with the first one. They keep adding layers and layers to the mystery, letting the plot wander with no purpose whatsoever. The ending is disappointing, if by chance the viewer still has any hope that at least some of the stories will come to a satisfying closure. I would discourage anyone who has not interest in learning french from watching this series.
