The Academy Awards: 78th Oscars (2006)

SEASON:

Critics Consensus

Jon Stewart's likable -- but unfortunately muted -- turn can't save the sluggish 78th Oscars -- though a surprising upset for the night's top honor at least gave viewers something to talk about.

Enter Stewart, who was truly a fish out of water: stiff, uncomfortable and swallowed by a podium onstage.

A couple of Stewart's jokes fell flat early on, but he bounced back and performed admirably, filling the host's tuxedo with steadiness and grace.

Crash crashed the party at the end of a long, utterly predictable night.

The best opening half hour of any Oscar ceremony EVER -- the funniest monologue, the best clips... Jon Stewart killed.

[Jon Stewart] didn't sell out to host the Super Bowl of awards shows. He didn't aim for the old-school vaudeville shtick of Billy Crystal to broaden his appeal. He was his Comedy Central self throughout: wry, deadpan, flip, and slightly subversive.

Stewart turned in a refreshing if somewhat underpowered performance. In keeping with The Daily Show's predilection for self-conscious naffness, Stewart's delivery always maintains a marvelous faltering modesty

Ostensibly honoring a "Return to Glamour," the show was an almost unceasing parade of speeches and clips vaunting Hollywood's invaluable worth as a force for societal improvement.

While the opening montage of classic Hollywood westerns felt clever and fresh in a world overrun with Brokeback parodies, the show overall felt plodding and unfocused.

Though Stewart was a breath of fresh air, the Oscar ceremony was still stuffy and bloated.

Classy opening, classy set, classy host, but the 78th Annual Academy Awards were a big-time bore.
