The Byrds of Paradise: Season 1 (1994)

Season 1
The Byrds of Paradise

Critics Consensus

The Byrds of Paradise is a wistful slice of culture shock that solidly fleshes out the grieving family at its core -- although the series is conspicuously less thoughtful in its depiction of Hawaiian natives.

Critic Reviews for The Byrds of Paradise Season 1

All Critics (10) | Top Critics (7)

The storytelling in Byrds of Paradise is choppy, but stick around for the sunsets, terrific surfing scenes, and the lilting native language.

The Byrds of Paradise is not only gorgeous but winning, its escapism tempered with an intelligent reality.

The energy level of this series could be turned up gently, not to sitcom hyperactivity, but at least a level or two above laconic... [But] this is a nice show, and ABC has ordered 13 episodes. It deserves the chance.

Byrds is at once charming and predictable... This WASPs-humbled-in-the-presence-of-ethnic- eccentrics ploy is already pretty tired.

Solid, commercial TV, The Byrds of Paradise plays comfortably and attractively.

A pleasing, amiable melodrama. It tempers its sugary domestic dissections with appreciable doses of unexpected humor-family entertainment with enough sardonic bite to achieve broad appeal.

The Hawaiian locations and prominence of local actors give Paradise an appealing ambience. What literally ruins this series, though, is its absence of surprises. You always know what's coming.

There are some nice touches in this show, but... problems are resolved too neatly and easily.

Jun 7, 2019 | Full Review…

A slavishly metronomic seriocomic-rhythm, an attitude toward the native population that vacillates between glorification and condescension, overwritten scripts and a parade of tortuously idiosyncratic minor characters.

The scenery is pleasant to look at, the dialogue sounds important, and the characters act like they are going through heavy-duty changes. But, in the end, there's nobody or nothing here to make you care.
