The Carrie Diaries: Season 1 (2013)

SEASON:

TOMATOMETER

Critic Consensus: Anna Sophia Robb is charming as the lead in The Carrie Diaries, even if this Sex and the City spinoff sometimes suffers from overwrought narration and so-so writing.

Tv Season Info

Based on Candace Bushnell's young-adult book series of the same name, this prequel to "Sex and the City" focuses on teenage Carrie Bradshaw (AnnaSophia Robb) growing up in suburban Connecticut in the 1980s. Series 1 finds Carrie and her family still reeling from the recent death of Carrie's mom. One bright spot for Carrie is the start of her new internship at a law firm in Manhattan. While in the city, Carrie meets fashion editor and party gal Larissa (Freema Agyeman), who mistakes Carrie for someone older and becomes her mentor. Carrie then tries juggling her wild new experiences in New York City with her ordinary high-school life, where she hangs out with pals Maggie (Katie Findlay), Mouse (Ellen Wong) and Walt (Brendan Dooling). She also becomes attracted to Sebastian (Austin Butler), the troubled new boy who got kicked out of his old school. As the season progresses, the balancing act gets tougher, and Carrie begins finding her voice through her journal writing.

If Sex and the City has a soul (does any TV series have a soul?), then The Carrie Diaries has tapped it.

Passable yet too often cloying little trinket.

The CW's The Carrie Diaries is like a real-life video version of that old story The Monkey's Paw, in which a mother's wish for the return of her dead son results in a shambling, mutilated corpse knocking at her door.

Since the creators... are as uncertain about the tone of the show as they are about its audience, viewers are likely to be more puzzled than entertained.

The CW's attempt to capture the magic of Sex and the City in a prequel, set in 1984, could have gone very wrong. But The Carrie Diaries is surprisingly right.

Robb is instantly appealing as a 16-year-old Carrie Bradshaw in The Carrie Diaries, a fun and frothy Sex and the City prequel that dares to imagine what its beloved leading lady was like before she started dating Mr. Big and having cosmos with the girls.

As someone who's been completely won over by this cast and series - despite its (several) faults - I'm really hoping that The CW pulls a surprise and lets us into Carrie's life for a little longer.

While I'd be sad if Carrie & Co. were never to return, I'd be satisfied with where things were left.

For all my problems with the show it was still enjoyable to watch.

The voice overs (CANON) are just as painful as they were in "SATC," but "The Carrie Diaries" is too harmless, too easy on the brain, and too sweet to raise much of a fuss over.
