Critic Reviews for The Exorcist Season 1

All Critics (53) | Top Critics (27)

Maybe someday there'll be a place on television for a show about religion helping people to cope with the everyday horrors that can strike at any time, but that show obviously can't be The Exorcist.

Sep 22, 2016 | Full Review…

Evil still lurks in the hearts of children in The Exorcist, a reboot of the classic film that benefits from a sharp cast, including Geena Davis, and a chill that will make even horror veterans reach for an extra blanket.

Sep 22, 2016 | Full Review…

The pilot holds some promise, and then watching children act like profane, satanic monsters is almost always unsettling, even when network standards don't permit certain words.

Sep 22, 2016 | Full Review…

With expectations low, this Exorcist surprises with appealing leads, and - a big bonus point - the return to TV of Geena Davis.

Sep 22, 2016 | Rating: B+ | Full Review…

Judged by its pilot, The Exorcist looks to ground its demonic-possession drama in somber realism and gotta-see-what-happens plot twists. But if you've seen one exorcism, apparently you've seen 'em all.

If it can find a way for this slow-burn opening to pay off with big-time frights down the line, perhaps Fox can actually realize the impossible.

A series inspired by the original film did not sound like a great idea, but the end result has been quite dignified. [Full Review in Spanish]

Jul 10, 2018 | Full Review…

Father Tomas had a dream about the whole exorcism and witnessed it as it went on as if he was in the room. It was some Inception s**t!

Jun 18, 2018 | Full Review…

There are some genuinely creepy moments here, and the strength of the cast may eventually lead to some really quality horror.

Dec 20, 2017 | Full Review…

If the quality of the story and the special effects is maintained throughout, we should be in for a very thrilling ride.

Jan 22, 2017 | Rating: 4.5/5 | Full Review…

The best, though far from the most popular, of this season's many TV remakes is Fox's terrifying new twist on The Exorcist, buried in a Friday time period but delivering the shivery goods with ghoulish regularity.

Sep 23, 2016 | Full Review…

I was prepared to hate this, just because of the onslaught of reboots and remakes that has taken hold, but I was surprised to find myself intrigued.

Audience Reviews for The Exorcist: Season 1

A worthy and glorious ending to the Regan & Pazuzu storyline, and that was just a plus Something of a breath of fresh air in the "supernatural" horror genre. An excellent combination of -sorely missed- brilliant writing and acting, what this series achieved is nothing to sneeze at; After 70 years of horror movies, from Devil Rides Out to VVitch and Hereditary, who would have thought it is still possible to even make an 80-min movie based solely around demonic possession, let alone a series, that is not only "actually" horrifying and scary yet is also thought-provoking. The actual "horror" isn't just in what you see (still pretty scary); it's written in the atmosphere, the feeling you get when you see a demonic invasion and a corrupt church and law enforcement, coupled with the evil in human nature and lack of presence of God where you can't tell if what you are feeling is influenced by God or Demons; that world is truly scary. Who should you run away from, towards whom? There always has been likes of Polanski or Lynch and many in between (mentioned at the end) who truly respected the integrity and importance of "the screenplay" and didn't settle for repetition of the horror flick formula to get a few scares; instead searched for new ways to provide a rich atmosphere of fear and horror. This is a combination of justified scary scenes and an atmospheric fear. The Innocents, Hellraiser, Susperia, Blair Witch, The Ritual, The Believers and a handful of others

An under advertised horror masterpiece ... this TV series is all the way up there with Marianne and Hill House.

Whilst it doesn't compare to the classic original, it still is respectful enough that the links to The Exorcist not only work but feel right.
  • Oct 19, 2020
Geena Davis is back!!! She will take a hammer to your knees if you disagree :) An extremely interesting move forward on the original movie which is so dear to my heart! The acting is sublime from all characters who probably knew that if they f'ed up the original movie with a 10 episode continuation of Regans life hereafter...they would never work again! Thank you! What a superb leap forward on a classic horror movie!

The season has some flair in its plot, but suffered from unconvincing special effects and a lack of imagination when it came to demonic intentions and special effects.
  • Aug 18, 2020
It´s awesome how they surprise you without the jumpscare factor. The soundtrack is not great but it is inmersive. I´d definetly put more work on it. The acting on the other hand is very solid helping the character development grow as the story evolves. It´s definetly worth your time for a rainy afternoon

Looks a bit better in the context of knowledge from season 2.
  • Jul 01, 2020
i wish there will be Season 3. You know this movie is great and I don't get why it has the low rating. This is better than other horror series. This is a 100% recommended series to watch.

This show was great, if Fox didn't want it someone else should have picked it up. I streamed both seasons in 3 days...couldn't stop watching...

Pleasantly surprised at how good this series turned out.
