Jack is a former child actor who starred in "Triumph's Boy," a popular TV show from the '80s and '90s that was similar to "Lassie" but with a dog puppet instead of a collie. After the show was canceled, the crude pooch, Triumph, went into a downward spiral and took Jack with him. Fifteen years later Jack, who is no longer in contact with Triumph, finds himself happy and out of show business. Then Triumph re-enters Jack's life, showing up at the house where he lives with his mother and moving in.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

Though the sitcom elements of The Jack and Triumph Show restrict the overall quality of the humor, the dog-on-the-street sequences evoke enough belly laughs to make it howl-worthy.

The show's most memorable moments occur when Triumph veers from the script and ventures into the real world, much like he first did on Late Night with Conan O'Brien almost two decades ago. Go to Full Review

Triumph (a.k.a. Robert Smigel) still yields a few belly laughs, but casting a dog puppet in a multi-camera sitcom, even with throwback references and meta jokes, proves just a bit too ALF for its own good. Go to Full Review

There's a spirit of chaos around The Jack & Triumph show that is almost as intoxicating as anything its target audience might have sitting in their Volcano vaporizer. Go to Full Review

Weirdly, the show is primarily a scripted, multi-camera sitcom, which is substantially less funny than Triumph's usual comedy routine. Go to Full Review

Smigel's ad-lib style is no less sharp or scathing in this show, but the sitcom format really constricts how much of it he can do since most of the show is scripted. Go to Full Review
Garrett Martin Paste Magazine 02/25/2015

As always Triumph is too absurd of a concept to ever feel truly mean-spirited, and the deeply likable Squibb and McBrayer help smooth out those edges even more. Go to Full Review

06/12/2016 Really a great show, as good as any featured on Adult Swim over the years. It's experimental nature was part of its charm, and it was a unique and hilarious bright spot in the schedule. Michael Koman and Robert Smigel acheived greatness, despite the show being cancelled prematurely by a heartless network often accused of being intent on destroying the very fabric of society with poor decisions like canceling shows like this.
