Hawke has pulled off something remarkable: a series that’s neither a hagiography nor a hatchet job, but something truthful and compassionate that humanises two great stars we all thought we knew. Go to Full Review

J M @jeffmarshallmovieblogger 01/21/2024 Let's not beat around the bush - this is a landmark achievement by Ethan Hawke and the best celebrity documentary that I've ever seen. I had every intention of watching one or two segments of this six-part series and catch the others later; however, I was so mesmerized that I disregarded the rest of my plans for the day and binged it all in one sitting. I wish there had been six more hours!! Hawke gathers a cadre of celebrity friends and admirers who read transcripts from taped interviews that were destroyed, as well as regale the audience with their own memories and thoughts on Newman and Woodward. We finally have a documentary that is brutally honest about its subjects but doesn't come across as tabloid journalism or exploitation. Hawke is clearly infatuated with his subject matter, but he's still able to portray them honestly - warts and all. Interviews with their children and grandchildren are quite frank and obviously give us the best look of who these Oscar winners were when the cameras weren't rolling. I can't say I had ever given much thought to Newman and Woodward, but after this remarkable documentary, I'm dying to dive into their filmographies and discover what I've been missing. If I see a better movie or limited series in 2022, I'll be very surprised! Congratulations and thank you to all involved! - Jeff Marshall, Movie Blogger (Facebook) See more Shari H 12/03/2023 Exquisite. So worth a watch. So well done. See more Kristin K 03/25/2023 I think it was a lot of good information and great film clips, but the storytelling was confusing. Not sure why Ethan inserted himself and his friends into the movie. If you want to do voices to substitute for the principle subjects, that's ok, but don't make it about other people. Kind of like, "these are my cool friends, and we're too cool to wash our hair or brush our teeth". Ethan looks terrible. Also, the last 3-4 episodes lacked direction. It was boring and ambled all over the place. What does Zoe Kazan have to do with anything? His daughter telling him how to make the movie? Argh.
