The Looming Tower is quite the piece of kit.

What was surprising was how much of a high-octane rollercoaster the first episode was.

As volatile, womanising FBI agent John O'Neill, [Jeff Daniels] no less all-American but revelling in a foul-mouthed, all-guns-blazing role taken from the sort of real life that's stranger than fiction.

It's probably too much to expect an American-financed production to put itself into the minds of the enemy, to make the drama richer and confound our sympathies.

The problem is that The Looming Tower doesn't communicate much more than research.

The effect is to turn the story into a police procedural where everyone knows the bad guys are going to get away with it and the personal struggles of the main characters feel especially low stakes given the tragedy we know is inevitable.

This miniseries is an accurate, informative, and somewhat shocking retelling of actual events in American history that's as entertaining as it is jaw-dropping to those who couldn't read through the transcripts of the 9/11 Commission Report.

On the evidence of the first episode, it is quite a gripping series, and there are two fantastic performances at its heart.

Guns, bombs, complicated intrigue in terrorist drama.

If you want to understand how the most important episode in modern history happened, this landmark series is the place to start.
March 5, 2018
The three episodes made available to critics are masterful and smart in how they use our knowledge of what happened on 9/11 to supply retroactive suspense to the events of the late 1990s.

Anchored by strong performances by Daniels, Sarsgaard, and Rahim, The Looming Tower turns an unflinching eye on its subject matter, making neither pristine heroes of its American protagonists nor two-dimensional villains of its antagonists.
