This dark edge is not quite present in Baron Cohen's performance.

What's most frustrating about The Spy is that it's good. In more even hands, it could have been truly great.

Even though Baron Cohen turns in a splendid performance alongside some fantastic actors...there's something a little flat about the whole affair.

The only way a show like this will work is with a magnetic presence at its center, and Cohen is engaging at best.

Strong performances by Sacha Baron Cohen and Noah Emmerich, paired with Gideon Raff's steady hand, makes The Spy very watchable, albeit nothing revolutionary.

A must-see show...

The Spy ends up being a relatively economical bingewatch that clocks in at six hours with little time wasted. Even the tiniest, seemingly inconsequential things that happen along the way come full circle in the final episode.

Sacha Baron Cohen flexes his acting chops here to give a thoughtful and measured performance of a man that finds himself becoming lost in the persona he has created for himself. An interesting angle for Baron Cohen, of all actors, to explore.

Now there are more than a few cliches to be honest... but what there also is, is a crucial performance by Sacha Baron Cohen.

Sacha Baron Cohen provides another reminder that being a clown requires serious acting chops, which the famous prankster puts to use in "The Spy," a taut Netflix limited series based on a pretty remarkable true story.

The Spy may be subtler than The Brothers Grimsby, but it's not as good as it needs to be.

As a bonus, Sacha Baron Cohen turns in an exceptionally strong dramatic performance in the lead.

Gangly, ambitious and often shocked by his own daring, Cohen the comedian makes Cohen the spy into a compelling character, with no winks or gimmicks.

[A] nailbiter of a saga powered by a dazzling Sacha Baron Cohen in the role of the legendary Israeli agent.

In all, he is a model warrior, and The Spy has no interest in revealing any element of his inner life that might make him seem more human.
September 5, 2019
The Spy unspools an intense tale of suspense, building to a conclusion that is as devastating as it is inevitable.

Baron Cohen is hugely impressive, playing things unfailingly straight as Cohen's own sense of self atrophies over years of audacious imposture and ascetic self-containment.
September 5, 2019
The Spy is another high-wire act from the nonpareil screen presence, albeit a shakier one that often lives and dies on the actor's very particular set of skills.

The Spy is definitely not as flashy as a James Bond or Jason Bourne thriller but makes up for action with truly nail-biting moments.Too deliberately paced for the big screen but feels more like a feature film than a television series.

Mostly plods through its familiar espionage narrative, a dull illustration of complex history.
