No consensus yet.
In short, a sweet, melancholic wrap -- with an unexpectedly sobering kicker.
"Her" feels like the reunion we needed to reconnect with these characters.
"This Is Us" delivers, nothing too fancy, but dramatic enough to have its fanbase wanting answers. It all works when tethered together, because the writing and acting is strong, and the show expertly knows how to make eyes teary.
The episode was just filler leading up to the final five minutes (and the flash forward), so it is all that matters.
This Is Us created excitement for what lies ahead.
Sometimes This Is Us can really stretch that idea of thematically connecting timelines, but it's effective here.
Her is a decent episode of This Is Us. Expecting anything more as a cap to this stretch of the show would have been unrealistic.
If the endpoint is predictable, the journey to getting there at least needs to be interesting. And that's where this episode (and good chunks of this season) dropped the ball.
After three seasons of these ploys, the show's emotional core is beginning to feel a little hollow; who knows how it would feel after three more theoretical seasons.
