Sometimes it felt a bit jarring. There were a lot of 'state of the world' speeches by characters, a lot of lectures, which I just don't think you get in real life.

A masterful hybrid of old-school soaper and neo-tawdry mystery, it's cheesy but please-y in its rabid insistence on outrageous melodrama.

With its air of glamour, thirtysomething friends, sub-plots involving lawyers and doctors, the whole thing feels like a flashback to the '90s, or at any rate a particular televisual version thereof. Seriously, what's not to love?

This suspense ride feels more like a soap opera than a tv show with logic in its script. It's dull and harmless, and thrillers should not be like that. [Full review in Spanish].

A noir-thriller What/If is not. This is a messy, trashy prime-time soap opera, except on streaming. Or worse, a midday movie with a slightly higher production budget and an Oscar winner.

It's like really cheap store-bought nacho cheese: Once you start, you can't finish, but there's never a moment of joy in the experience of eating it, and afterward all you're left with is a bigger gut and a deep sense of shame and revulsion.

An intense performance from Zellweger in a soap opera that doesn't go big. [Full Review in Spanish]

Mild sex and violence in fun, dark, soapy Zellweger drama.

Series creator Mike Kelley, who also created Revenge, broadens the scope beyond that of the '90s movie to which his characters refer, but it doesn't immediately grab.

I doubt the series is that smart or consciously knowing. Sometimes, as Sigmund Freud said, a cigar is just a cigar -- and sometimes trash TV is just trash TV

Mike Kelley's anthology thriller is an addictive, tongue-in-cheek homage to '90s neo-noir, packed with preposterous melodrama and juicy twists.

A show so ill-conceived that it's virtually unwatchable, yet so audaciously bad that it's impossible to turn off.

It's not a good show, but it's entertaining in a very specific way. Zellweger has sunk her teeth so deeply into this notion of Welcome To Rich Prowling Cougartown that she's practically licking up bowls of milk.

Despite all this, What/If has just enough emotional truth mixed in with the absurdity to stop it spiralling into absolute madness.

You can float away on your own eye-rolls, if the rising soap bubbles don't get you first.

What/If is much like a glass of chardonnay on a hot summer day. One or two makes for a wonderful afternoon. Three or four and things start blending together.

It's overblown, comically and morally black and white, like fake news. And then there's all that corny thunder and lightning.
May 24, 2019
What/If makes for a sometimes campy, sometimes entertaining throwback to a subgenre of films most Hollywood studios aren't interested in (or capable of) making anymore.

What/If is a series that can't really be judged on whether it's "good" or "bad" (but if we must: it's definitely the latter). It's preposterous but compulsive; I can't quite say I've enjoyed watching the episodes but I'm dying to see how it ends.

The joy, guilty pleasure, escape-from-this-crazy-world a show like What/If should provide simply isn't there.
