Endowed with a heart-achingly soulful voice reminiscent of jazz great Billie Holiday, R&B sensation Amy Winehouse became an overnight recording superstar, only to struggle, even in the face of her immense talent, with depression as well as drug and alcohol addiction. Born and raised in a musically inclined household in Northern London, Winehouse attracted the attention of music executives and released her debut album "Frank" before her 20th birthday. While her first album placed her back on the charts in her native U.K., Winehouse's sophomore effort, "Back to Black," catapulted her to international stardom and became one of the Top Ten best-selling records worldwide in 2008. Sadly, the troubled singer's physical and mental health - eating disorders, emphysema, and depression exacerbated by her various addictions - continued to decline over the next two years, and a third album failed to materialize in a timely fashion. Even as episodes of her run-ins with the police, hospital admittances, and public fiascos subsided, so too did expectations for a professional comeback. Following a failed attempt in June 2011, Winehouse's young life ended on an all-too-familiar note when she was found dead in her home the following month, leaving behind a promising career largely unfulfilled.
