One of the most talented basketball players of her generation, Maya Moore began her athletic career in high school. Born in Jefferson City, Missouri in 1989, Moore won countless accolades during her high school career, such as being named WBCA National Player of the Year during her senior year. She even played for the 16U Nike Travel Team the Georgia Metros in her spare time. Enrolling at the University of Connecticut, Moore continued her successful streak. She was named the NCAA Dayton Regional Most Outstanding Player, BIG EAST Scholar Athlete of the Year, ESPY for Top Female College Athlete, and ESPN The Magazine Academic All- American of the Year during her junior year alone. In 2009, Moore was invited to the USA Basketball Women's National Team training camp where she was selected to play for the United States at the 2010 FIBA World Championship and the 2012 Olympics. Moore made good on the honor, winning the gold medal with her teams at the FIBA World Championship for Women in 2010 and at the Olympic Games in London in 2012. In the meantime, shortly after graduating, Moore was selected first overall in the WNBA Draft by the Minnesota Lynx in 2011. She would also play with the Spanish club Ros Casares Valencia, with whom she competed in ten EuroLeague Women games, and with the Chinese club Shanxi Flame, with whom she competed in the Women's Chinese Basketball Association. In 2016, Moore was selected to play for the US once more at the Olympic Games in Rio.
