Matthew Simpson

Tomatometer-approved critic
Biography:

Matthew is a writer and podcaster based in Vancouver, Canada. A lifelong Trekkie, he has seen every episode of every series at least twice, which sounds like a lot until you realize he’s also watched The Office (US) all the way through seven times since 2020, and then it still sounds like a lot. He thinks that The Leftovers is the greatest show of the 21st century so far, that Star Wars has worn out its welcome, and that the single best thing The Simpsons has ever done was their rendition of The Raven.

Wonder Man: Season 1 (2026) 91% 8/10 EDIT “Marvel's critics and fans alike have been asking the studio to try something different for years now and while they have experimented with tone and genre to some extent, Wonder Man represents the biggest departure to date.” – Exclaim! Jan 23, 2026 Full Review Untamed: Season 1 (2025) 83% EDIT “Though Untamed might not be the most original of stories, it’s gorgeous to look at and competently executed, and a fine way to waste away a lazy summer evening.” – That Shelf Aug 12, 2025 Full Review Futurama: Season 12 (2024) 64% EDIT “What really makes the show work is the characters we’ve come to love over the last 25 years. They’re the same bunch of misfits, and they’re played by the actors we love. ” – Movies We Texted About Jul 13, 2025 Full Review Star Wars: Tales of the Empire: Season 1 (2024) 88% EDIT “Tales of the Empire falls in line with the franchise as a whole: the good is good, and the rest is filler at best. Fortunately, this time, the good is indeed very good and definitely worth your time.” – Movies We Texted About Jul 12, 2025 Full Review Smoke: Season 1 (2025) 74% EDIT “Egerton is a great actor at the centre of a great cast, and that makes Smoke worth your time. But you’d be easily forgiven for saving this one up to binge on a rainy day.” – That Shelf Jul 3, 2025 Full Review Stick: Season 1 (2025) 81% 7/10 EDIT “Fans of [Owen Wilson's] fast-talking style will be rewarded with laughs, but it's the vulnerability of the character that draws us in and keep us invested. ” – Exclaim! Jun 2, 2025 Full Review Murderbot: Season 1 (2025) 95% 7/10 EDIT “While it definitely lands in familiar territory, ['Murderbot'] still manages to carve out an identity of its own.” – Exclaim! May 14, 2025 Full Review The Four Seasons: Season 1 (2025) 78% EDIT “The Four Seasons is a charming little series about the power and importance of friendship.” – That Shelf May 10, 2025 Full Review Black Mirror: Season 7 (2025) 84% EDIT “Black Mirror remains on point with Season 7! ” – That Shelf May 10, 2025 Full Review Doctor Who: Season 2 (2025) 92% EDIT “It’s difficult to evaluate an entire series from just a single episode—we only got a peek at the premiere for this review—but rest assured that if you like Doctor Who, this is fun Doctor Who.” – That Shelf Apr 27, 2025 Full Review Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man: Season 1 (2025) 97% 8/10 EDIT “One of the best versions of Spider-Man to date.” – Exclaim! Mar 4, 2025 Full Review What If...?: Season 3 (2024) 80% EDIT “If you have liked What If…? to this point, you will definitely continue to do so [with Season 3]. If you’re not already a fan, this series may not be the best entry point, but luckily there’s something to love for all of us who are.” – That Shelf Dec 31, 2024 Full Review Shrinking: Season 2 (2024) 97% 8/10 EDIT “Shrinking is at its best when it's being sincere rather than funny — but it's still very funny.” – Exclaim! Nov 11, 2024 Full Review Agatha All Along: Season 1 (2024) 84% 6/10 EDIT “These first few episodes — and watching Kathryn Hahn and Aubrey Plaza competing to see who can be the biggest hambone — have intrigued me enough to carry on.” – Exclaim! Sep 26, 2024 Full Review Star Wars: The Acolyte: Season 1 (2024) 79% 7/10 EDIT “The Acolyte seems tailor-made to address the recent problems of Star Wars directly.” – Exclaim! Jun 19, 2024 Full Review Presumed Innocent: Season 1 (2024) 79% EDIT “The result here is a show that is worth your time if you are a fan of courtroom dramas, Jake Gyllenhaal, and horny media, but it’s not the event TV that perhaps Apple was hoping for.” – That Shelf Jun 10, 2024 Full Review Doctor Who: Season 1 (2024) 93% EDIT “There is plenty here in these first two episodes to give the audience hope ... and if the whole series can maintain the same energy, we should end up with a very silly, fun season of television, and that’s exactly what Doctor Who is at its best.” – That Shelf May 11, 2024 Full Review Dark Matter: Season 1 (2024) 81% 6/10 EDIT “Multiverses are so hot right now.” – Exclaim! May 9, 2024 Full Review Law & Order Toronto: Criminal Intent: Season 1 (2024) 100% EDIT “The tropes make it a beloved institution, and this entry into the franchise fits comfortably into it.” – That Shelf Mar 5, 2024 Full Review Avatar: The Last Airbender: Season 1 (2024) 62% 5/10 EDIT “Is this a show for kids or adults?” – Exclaim! Feb 22, 2024 Full Review Shōgun: Season 1 (2024) 99% 6/10 EDIT “Shōgun is a good show — but it sometimes feels like something is missing, and that something is holding it back from being great.” – Exclaim! Feb 22, 2024 Full Review Echo: Season 1 (2024) 70% EDIT “Echo is a noble effort, but it fails to address the issues that so many Marvel shows suffer from. It also fails to recapture the darker tone of Marvel’s Netflix offshoot. ” – That Shelf Jan 31, 2024 Full Review Monarch: Legacy of Monsters: Season 1 (2023) 86% EDIT “Between the performances, the monsters, and the writing, Apple has another hit on their hands for fans and non-fans of the Monsterverse alike. ” – That Shelf Dec 6, 2023 Full Review Loki: Season 2 (2023) 82% EDIT “The new season feels less consistent with a team of directors (including Benson & Moorhead, who helmed some of the stronger episodes) instead of a single voice, but the production design, effects, and music are all as great as they have ever been. ” – That Shelf Oct 15, 2023 Full Review The Fall of the House of Usher: Season 1 (2023) 90% EDIT “Flanagan has created something that is all at once uniquely Poe’s and his uniquely his, both classic and contemporary, and an exciting new addition to the horror canon.” – That Shelf Oct 15, 2023 Full Review
