Mixed messages -- blood guilt and revenge fantasies -- but you'll have a moderate amount of fun sorting them out. Go to Full Review

There's a great deal of opportunity in this film for scholarly approaches: the choices that the picture makes are that worthy of note. Go to Full Review

See more 06/25/2013 This was such a good movie. It's filled with fantasy with a twist of realism. I would definitely want to see this again. See more 12/24/2012 "Jack and the Beanstalk - The Real Story" is a pretty smart re-interpretation of the classic fable and despite some shortfalls it works more often than it doesn't. Setting the story in modern times might seem like an odd choice for a "Jack and the Beanstalk Story" but the script cleverly mixes a mystery with the film and the contrast between the corporate world that "Jack" lives in vs. the fantasy world he is forced to confront is pretty clever. It really is a fantasy world that he visits too, with it's own look and mythology, backed with some decent special effects and excellent costumes/puppets. The plot is too long though, at 3hrs +, the last subplot could have been trimmed down or eliminated because it introduces a villain that simply isn't necessary. It's also hard to tell who the film is aimed towards, because the mystery and running time seems like it's for older children and adults, while the source material is for smaller kids but there's no way they'll be able to stand the long running time. The best way to enjoy this is probably in small increments, breaking it into 2 or 3 parts so you don't get restless as you follow the plot. It has some silly bits of humour that don't really work and feels more like a mini series, but this is a good interpretation of the "Jack and the Beanstalk" story that brings something new to the table, meaning you'll be entertained throughout (though you'll probably need at least one or two bathroom breaks).
