Plays out like an antidote to films like Napoleon Dynamite that seem to exist for no other reason than to make audiences feel superior to lower-class buffoons.
CAST: Shirley MacLaine, Julia Stiles, Alessandro Nivola, Azura Skye, Daveigh Chase, Jennifer Coolidge, Randy Quaid, John Capodice, Edward Atterton, Alan Thicke, Dwight Armstrong, Lauri Johnson, MIka Boorem
DIRECTED BY: Marleen Gorris
SUMMARY: In this romantic comedy featuring Shirley MacLaine as a wacky grandma, Southern girl Carolina (Julia Stiles) envisions an entirely different existence for herself, far from the maddening mix that is her family. So, she leaves home for California, where she hopes she'll find some tranquility. But her efforts are soon wasted when she finds herself torn between two men.
MY THOUGHTS: "If not for Shirley MacLaine and the crazy family, this movie would have been quite boring. Her performance and the mix of all the odd but wonderful characters is what kept this movie afloat for me. It was quite funny when they all got around each other. But all in all just OK for me."
This was alright. I love Stiles and MacLaine, so I thought I was going to love this, but it kinda fell flat.
Average chick flick that sinks to a little below average with an ending that feels tacked on to make the audience happy.
