Movie Info

"Gotta Dance" is "Bad New Bears: morphed into the flip side of "Mad Hot Ballroom.". "Gotta Dance," the movie, chronicles the debut of the New Jersey Nets' first-ever senior hip-hop dance team, 12 women and one man -- all dance team newbies, from auditions through to center court stardom. As smooth dance moves are perfected and performed in front of thousands, aging myths and misperceptions are pulverized. Despite swollen ankles, exhausting rehearsals, fashion clashes and seemingly impossible dance steps, the NETSational Seniors go for it, spreading joy, inspiration and cool dance moves as they hip-hop their way into the hearts of Nets fans and beyond.

Heartwarming and full of self-deprecating humor, albeit somewhat over-long and repetitive.

It's a charmer in its own right.

Despite its engaging message and lovable stars, Gotta Dance is more a TV newsmagazine segment than a full-length feature.

Dori Berinstein's enjoyable documentary is about a 60-and-older hip-hop dance team.

Although the movie's editing and photography are lively, and its subjects are interesting, life didn't cooperate by offering up much drama.

Any viewers also in need of an attitude adjustment need only witness these lockin' and poppin' sages struggle without complaint to conquer creaky joints, impaired rhythmic instincts, and complicated choreography.

Audience Reviews for Gotta Dance

HIP HOP HOORAY! Finally, a film that real people of all ages can relate to! I saw this film at the Tribeca Film Festival and cheered, along with the rest of the audience, when these lively senior citizen hip hop newbies succeed in overcoming their personal challenges and inner demons and achieve victory as the NETSational Seniors! These folks are sure to dance their way into your heart! Put this film on the top of your list of fun things to do this summer!

I caught a screening of this film at the Sarasota Film Festival and I have not seen a documentary as enjoyable as this film in years. Before you know it the film is over and I was left wanting more - but I'm so glad I got to see it. When it opens near you - take your family and especially any seniors in your life - the film may just inspire them to go and learn hip hop! It looks like so much fun. You won't be disappointed. Dance - don't walk to a screening near you!
