Movie Info

Today is the last day of his life. Satché (played by actor/musician/poet Saül Williams) wakes up in perfect health, but is for some reason aware that this is to be his last day, and that he will not live to see the next morning. He is greeted by his family and friends, who also recognise the inevitability of Satché's demise. They gather, and in a fascinating and revealing ritual take turns praising Satché, and then pointing out his flaws. Satché takes to the streets of his Senagalese hometown, where he is treated as a hero and receives parting gifts, as all are aware that Satché will die overnight. He pays a visit to his first love, hangs out with his old friends, attends a civic reception in his honour, and spends time with his wife and children. His day is filled with both fear and joy. And the question that hovers over the day is: why did Satché return from America, where he could have had a future? With his third feature, after L'afrance and Andalucia, Alain Gomis uses magical realism and striking imagery to construct an unconventional meditation on migration. -- SFF
