Two green reporters and rivals working for the Washington Post, Bob Woodward (Robert Redford) and Carl Bernstein (Dustin Hoffman), research the botched 1972 burglary of the Democratic Party Headquarters at the Watergate apartment complex. With the help of a mysterious source, code-named Deep Throat (Hal Holbrook), the two reporters make a connection between the burglars and a White House staffer. Despite dire warnings about their safety, the duo follows the money all the way to the top.

Very difficult movie to follow. Dozens of names to remember, most of which aren't given an accompanying face to help you remember. But once you get an idea for the larger conspiracy and who's involved at what level it comes together nicely. Very well acted and written. Would probably rate half a star lower if it wasn't made in 1976 which is just crazy because the movie seems like it was made in 1995 or something. Minimal embellishments, very modern and content driven for its time. If youre looking for a character study or a fictionalized dramatic story maybe look elsewhere. If you want a heavy, content driven narrative about political events and journalistic investigations this is probably one of the best movies you will find.

This film shows how hard it is to penetrate a coordinated cover up and how important our free press is to uncover and eventually lead to reining in government malfeasance. Today there is talk of autocracy as if new. Evidently the roots of illegal activities that are well organized and coordinated by government agencies have a long history and likely at still well entrenched.
