Audience Reviews for Care Bears: The Nutcracker
I probably rate the movie too high because I watched it so many times when I was a kid. The storyline is solid but not as exciting as earlier Care Bears films. As in other Care Bears films, the film is narrated by a character who has had a past experience with the Care Bears. In this case, the lesson to be learned is that the story of ETA Hoffmann's "The Nutcracker" is an exciting one. There are certainly better interpretations of the story than this one. The movie seems to be aware of its own cuteness and attempts to use that for the sake of comedy. The Rat King is a lovable villain. He is voiced by the same actor who voiced Beastly in the Nelvana TV series. He is a buffoon, terrified of the vezier, but the rats loyally follow him. There are too many "huh?" moments and double takes. Also, chase scenes get a little silly and overdone: "Charge!" is yelled too many times. If you want to introduce your child to the story of "The Nutcracker" I would choose something else. Tchaikovsky's music is used within the score, but there are too many digressions from the story for me to call this a just adaptation.
