Movie Info

DEATH METAL ANGOLA focuses on Sonia Ferreira and Wilker Flores, both of whom live and breathe heavy metal as they run the Okutiuka orphanage, a home to 55 children in the war-ravaged city of Huambo, Angola. Flores is a death metal guitarist who uses sounds and rhythms of his extreme music as a path to healing, or, as girlfriend Sonia puts it, "to clear out the debris from all these years of war." Together, the two dream of staging Angola's first-ever national rock concert, bringing together members from different strands of the Angolan metal scene from different provinces. What begins as a seemingly unrealistic undertaking quickly gains momentum, aided by social media and propelled by members of the death metal underground, who join together to stage the event. Director Jeremy Xido pays attention to the music only peripherally, without providing cultural context to supplement the history, and the country's demotic kuduro genre gets only a couple of passing references.

An upbeat chronicle of very hard rock in a very hard place, Death Metal Angola is one of the livelier and more enticingly exotic additions to the ever-burgeoning music-documentary sub-genre.

I've seen more than enough documentaries about extreme metal that mythologize violent, antisocial behavior; this one shows people using harsh, aggressive music to build a positive community.

"Death Metal Angola" is engrossing, entertaining and, above all, deeply true - here's to hoping more people find a way to see it.
