"We are far from Vietnam." But "Vietnam is fighting for us" in the "war between the poor and the rich".

If not for other reasons, this movie is notable especially for Godard's contribution, his dialogue with the camera. It may be considered as a starting "decentring" intervention into the field of colonial discourse, which produced visible consequnces for the concept of subjectivity.

The brave work of seven different very influential filmmakers who, in their seven individual parts, show their sympathy for the North Vietnamese in the Vietnam conflict that was taking place at the time. A brave documentary and a direct political attack as well as a creative one, dealing with current affairs that represents the very active political times in which it was made.

Some very strong political critique, mixing styles which though without clear attribution, can be discerned and enjoyed more through that process. A roadside masque is attributed in voice-over to a play mocking LBJ and McNamara, in a playful but pointed scene typical of Marker. Resnais has Fresson discoursing directly about the war to a near mute woman, comparing it to WWII and equating the US to the German role in relation to the Vietnamese. Godard himself appears, and Ivens has some documentary footage of fiery US protest of both types that seems perhaps more timely then ever.

Magnifique documentaire, certes inégal(film collectif oblige) mais qui contient quelques petites perles comme les parties de William Klein et D'Agnès Varda.
