Sometimes the movie feels a bit lost, but it's still great. Scorsese ability to handle such large groups of people is amazing. Great story and acting, and perfect in all its technical aspects.

Gangs of New York should be about half an hour shorter. Nevertheless, Day-Lewis gives one of his greatest performances ever, and we get the first collaboration of what would become one of the greatest Director-Actor duos in Scorsese-DiCaprio.

One of my top 5 movies ever........Scorsese, Day-Lewis, and DiCaprio make a great team. Wish they'd do something together again.

Gangs of New York it's a modern masterpiece. The Di Caprio performance was incredible, but the best actor of the movie is Daniel Day-Lewis, who was amazing in this film, but in the Oscars Adrien was a bit better. And Cameron Diaz... Well... That's the only bad thing of the movie.

In terms of lesser Scorsese movies, there are seldom more examples of this than Gangs of New York. Although the film is okay and has great moments, when you think of Martin Scorsese's filmography, you immediately refer to them as masterpieces. The story is set during the Draft Riots in Civil War era Manhattan, where Amsterdam (Leonardo DiCaprio) vows revenge against Bill the Butcher (Daniel Day-Lewis) after the murder of his father Priest (Liam Neeson). Taking out the post-9/11 politics and the behind the scenes feud between Scorsese and the Weinsteins, Gangs of New York is probably Miramax's answer to Titanic with its near three hour runtime, fictional characters interacting with historic figures, the romance with Amsterdam and Jenny the Irish pickpocket (Cameron Diaz), and the excellent climactic riot scenes. Of course, Martin Scorsese, with his signature cinematic kineticism, was the right person to depict the obscure yet extravagantly violent moment of American history. However, where the plot clashes is when Amsterdam meets and befriends Bill in the middle. For a guy who witnessed his father die in his hands, he doesn't seem to hold much of a grudge for the villain until the end, even for a typical murder/revenge story. As for Miss Diaz, she produces an Irish accent so awful that you'd swear she was given less time to practice, if at all. While shot brilliantly, visually pleasing, and with an operatic vintage-New-York-accented ham by Day-Lewis, Gangs of New York is unfocused and all over the place. It especially doesn't help when the two executive muppets of Miramax interfere with a prolific director's vision. (3 Dead Rabbits out of 5)

Once again, Daniel Day-Lewis is the star of the show, but I can't for the life of me figure out how this was nominated for 11 Academy Awards

Amazing leads and incredible screenplay are the carriers of the movie againts its complex structure.
