dustin d @RT12543299 06/15/2021 I was hoping for (but not really expecting) a glimpse into the Hermit Kingdom. Instead, A Schoolgirl's Diary is about how in idyllic North Korea, hard, honest work eventually pays off, and interpersonal conflicts are easily resolved. It is not even entertainingly bad; it is just boring. I sort of identified with the schoolgirl's father--a factory worker pushing 50 who is working for a doctorate on the side, while his family resents the difficulties this puts them through. But this wasn't enough to save a shoddy propaganda film. See more 08/08/2009 Awful except for the fact that it's the first internationally released North Korean film. A schoolgirl is sad because her dad keeps going off to work in a non-descript factory to develop some non defined technology to help Kim Jong Ill. Acting, story and script are dire but it's still kind of interesting to see inside North Korea and is unintentionally funny at moments. My favourite bit was when all the schoolkids join in a jolly 'We love our chairman" song. See more Read all reviews
