It's funny and diverting and it's even found accommodation for the elderly. Thoughtful, that, in a family film.

Part of the greatness of the film is the fact that the actors seem to be enjoying themselves so thoroughly.

A very hard-working film, so much so that it seems to be driven partly by an anxious desire to prove itself capable of matching its predecessor. Ignore this if you can, for it's such a satisfyingly wild ride that its flaws can be forgiven.

Don't bother. Play an old-fashioned board game instead.

Like all good video games, there's a hint of yet another level at the end for those, like me, who are not yet ready to say Game Over.

This up-for-anything sequel to the 2017 reboot brings back the A-list cast (Jack Black is still MVP) for more in-game avatar shenanigans. It's just the ticket if you're looking for a comic blast for the holidays.

If the Jumanji masterminds insist on all this artificial sweetening, can the next level at least be Candy Crush?

Remember when Scorsese recently derided blockbusters for having no connection to actual human psychology? He was talking about this kind of film.

The Next Level works precisely for the same reasons why Welcome to the Jungle did. It's never boring, it's genuinely funny in a way that's family friendly but still clever, and the cast's chemistry is outstanding - it just works.

When did Jack Black stop being funny? He's now just a tiresome version of Oscar the Grouch.

Hart and Johnson raise a few laughs. That's about it.
December 12, 2019
The action sequences are lifeless; the lessons valid but arguably stale; and the trimmings, mere bloat.

Despite a mildly entertaining ostrich stampede, it doesn't even try to one-up the action sequences of "Welcome to the Jungle," which wasn't exactly "The Matrix" in the first place.

The result is a largely successful, if more unbalanced ride. It's also oddly wistful and melancholic.
December 12, 2019
In its determination to rely on the tried-and-true elements of Welcome to the Jungle, The Next Level stands still rather than taking a step forward.
December 12, 2019
The charismatic cast from the previous film feels ill-used in this lackluster sequel.
December 11, 2019
2manji feels kind of lifeless.
December 11, 2019
I liked the unexpected (if kinda trippy) spiritual element that comes into play late in the story. And whether we're spending time with the real-world characters or their Jumanji avatars, they're quite the likable bunch...

With fresher material, who wouldn't want to see this cast return for another go? Just when you think it's "game over" for "Jumanji," the franchise snags an extra life.

Let's be honest: If you're asking the Rock to do voices, you're out of ideas.
