First L 12/27/2024 About what I expected from a Key and Peele movie. Main characters are very funny and quick-witted. I thought the story overall was really weird. Jordan Peele and Keegan‑Michael Key team up once again for this feature-length film, and the duo’s chemistry is immediate; you know exactly who these characters are, thanks to the sketch-comedy instincts they bring to every line, glance, and physical gag. From the cat calendars referencing classic films to the non-stop movie callbacks, the film wears its genre love on its sleeve. The Shining nod definitely had me grinning and the recurring George Michael gags are great. Their suburban stiffness amidst street-gang chaos is hilarious. The supporting cast and side characters bring flavor without stealing the spotlight, and some surprising cameos (which I won’t spoil) are a lot of fun. As a satire of action-movie tropes, Keanu does a lot right. It pokes fun at extremes, though it sometimes flirts with embracing them instead of subverting them, with some of the film’s resolution feeling a bit too easy. And while the drug-trip scene leans cliché, Key’s excellent dancing and the nice film-grain aesthetic helped carry it. The film definitely prioritizes comedy over tight plotting; you’re watching for laughs, not logic. One small gripe: though the titular kitten remains appropriately central to the plot, I couldn’t help wishing it showed up more (especially because it’s so damn cute). What makes the film succeed, though, is how much fun the cast clearly has. That enthusiasm is contagious. If you’re looking for something that doesn’t take itself seriously and just wants to riff on absurd situations with strong comic timing, Keanu hits more than enough notes.
