... King Cohen endeavors to remove the stigma of indulging in a Cohen classic, and largely succeeds.
If you don't know the man, you should, and this is a lively, informative introduction.
The anecdotes from Cohen's early years in TV... are like a blueprint for how a clever artist can get a lot from a little.
Making a pretty strong case for his idiosyncratic vision and tenacity, it's likely to have moviegoers rushing to figure out where they can see obscurities like God Told Me To and Q...
There's nothing particularly inspired about Mitchell's treatment here - he's directed a lot of DVD extras, and this first feature feels like a plus-sized version of one - but there's considerable entertainment value in its subject.
The documentary directed by Steve Mitchell comes from a place of absolute love for this filmmaker who paved the way for many artists who came after and he inspired a generation of filmmakers to produce greatness on the fly.
It gives me the chance to listen to Cohen and his collaborators talk about the movies, it helps to highlight what is so special about him as an artist, and it makes me want to go back and revisit every one of his movies.
King Cohen is an interesting and informative documentary of a man who should be better known in the mainstream: Larry Cohen.
Mitchell is respectful of Cohen, but both men see the humor in what they're talking about, which makes for a portrait that is intensely funny and fun, as well as enlightening.
King Cohen is the love letter and thorough career retrospective it needs to be.
All in all, King Cohen is one of the best documentaries about Hollywood to come down the pike in a very long time.
